Can anyone confirm if the DCQC at Hy Vee @8301 N St Clair Ave is actually operational? It would be awesome to use it the weekend of the KC Gem Show up at the KCI Expo Center.

That one was confirmed as online, however, according to a post yesterday by someone on Plugshare:

"Henry 12 hours ago:
Blank screen. Called ChargePoint. They were unable to communicate with the unit remotely to restart it."

And Karl:

"Karl 5 days ago
Blank screen. Unresponsive buttons. :-( Fix me please. "

Appears the same problem for the one off I29/64th:

"Henry 12 hours ago :
Blank screen. ChargePoint was unable to connect to the unit to restart it."

Also 9717 N. Ash in Northern Liberty (maybe to far to bother):

"Henry 14 hours ago :
unit was in maintenance mode so I could not charge."

Henry gets around. Too bad we don't know him. That kills my plans to try the ones up I-29 this weekend.

If you have enough charge to get to The KC Public Library downtown, 14 West 10 Street Kansas City, Missouri 64105 downtown...that DCQC may be operational if not ICED:

"Eric 2 days ago :
Station was ICE'd by huge truck taking up two spots. Spot isn't signed yet. Why do people keep installing stations without signs....the stations are practically worthless unless they are signed."

Tom, there's L2 at Fenton Nissan off I-29/Tiffany Springs, west outer road (my dealer). They've been nice to me - they don't see LEAF drivers often, so they like watching an owned one in action.

There's L2 at the Harley Davidson Vehicle & Power Operations nearby where you'll be, but nobody's checked in there in over 10 months: 11401 N Congress Ave, Kansas City, MO, 64154. Don't bother with an L2 at Thoroughbred Ford @ I-29/Barry - it's inside their service center.

Thanks Kathy. I used the Harley last Oct or so when I had to pick up co-worker @ KCI. I definitely can't do a round trip KCI run w/o charging. L3 would be so nice but L2 is always option. With the warmer weather this week the battery might break into 5 bar temp range by next weekend.

If the DCQC is operational I might go ahead and try the one in St. Joe.

Where do I even start?

First I should say that I'm very appreciative to KCP&L and others for installing all of the new level 3 stations.

With that said, the implementation of these stations has been horrendously awful!!

1.) There is no signage next to these, so the spots are often ICE'd. Probably half the time I've tried to use one, some asshole has been blocking the space. When are the installers going to learn that signage is mandatory? I mean, how difficult is it to put of a freekin' sign? Suggestion: Put up a sign before the station, or when the station is installed.

2.) When I am actually able to park, about 75% of the time the station doesn't even work. It seems like the station will work for a few days, then the buttons will stop working, and finally the screen goes forever blank. ChargePoint is unable to remotely reset these stations, so all they can do is create a ticket with KCP&L.

I spoke with a ChargePoint representative on the phone yesterday, and she asked me which level 3 station in Kansas City was having issues. I told her "All of them."

Today, I spoke with another ChargePoint representative, and they indicated that KCP&L owns these stations, and they are getting complaints from people out the wazoo. They are equally in the dark, but have reported these issues to KCP&L dozens of times now. They KNOW KCP&L by name now.

One weird thing (this only worked for me at the Plaza Level 3) - The buttons weren't working on the station, so I took a queue from PlugShare poster, and did the following: I scanned my card, pressed the button for Chademo (didn't work), pressed all four buttons simultaneously, then pressed the button for Chademo. I was then able to move to the next screen. The charger worked fine then. When my charge was done, I tried starting a charge again. This time, everything worked normally. Very weird.

My guess is that whoever is installing these stations is loading the wrong firmware. I really, really, really wish KCP&L would fix these issues. I've tried most of the Level 3 stations in town, and I would say that over the past few days, only one worked correctly. All of the others had problems with buttons not working, or had the white screen issue. So far I'm batting about 1 in 8.

KCP&L (or whoever is installing these stations) needs to get their act together and install signs and fix these bugs!! KCP&L needs to turn things around before things get really negative.

I can confirm that this station DOES NOT work. As of this evening, it's experiencing the white screen issue.

white screen, that's different. i've only seen a black screen at the two i've been to. Since the padlocks on the henhouse (87th and lackman) are hanging open i assume that one isn't supposed to be turned on.

i will also say in defense of kcpl (wow really hate doing that), it took my office and chargepoint about 2 months to get the L2 machines properly implemented so they weren't on demo connections and even then something happened to require a different card on one day because of configuration malfunctions. i assume part of what we're seeing is similar to all that.

still nothing absolves them of the criminally stupid placement at starbucks.

Well smack my lips and call me sugar...the DCQC @ Rosanna Square actually works.

119th and Metcalf, just west on the north side of 119th between Advanced Auto Parts and Oliver's Hair Salon. It's in the Oliver's Hair Salon parking lot. It's actually a good place but a horrible installation. I'll post pics Monday.

Thanks, Eric, for all your research and rants! I certainly appreciate yourfrustration.

You all may think I'm a little crazy, but the signage ticks me off enough to print some myself. Yes, I've gone so far as slipping a dozen 8.5 x 11 signs into plastic sleeve protectors and I plan to take my trusty box-sealing tape with me to go stick them on the EVSE boxes. If there's a wall or post where the parking space is, a sign is going there, too. I may even bring some scrap wood and a hammer to place a post, if that's needed! Worst that can happen is they'll get taken down or blow away, right? I'll wear dark sunglasses, hide my hair in a hoodie and park in the crowd. ;)

Yes, I have issues with waiting on simple stupid things to get fixed!

(Edit). "Here's your sign"

Kathy -

Congrats on your first level 3 charge. Once these stations are signed and they all work, things will be awesome!! And when the other 980 level 2 stations go in this summer, things will be really, really awesome!!!!

I certainly share your frustration about the lack of signage. I'm not sure if I'd personally put up signs though. We don't own the stations or their locations, and I would sure hate to tork off some of the owners -- then they might not put signs in, or even worse, just decide not to install any more stations because of the "hassle." If I were a location owner, I personally think I'd be a little annoyed if someone put up a sign before I had gotten around to it.

Please don't think I'm criticizing .... I'm not. The sign is awesome (leaves no ambiguity whatsoever). I just think we have to eye the long term goals, and not irritate KCP&L or the locations. It's just my 2 cents.

Because this project is now really visible to the city council, the mayor's office, and even the Kansas and Missouri governor's offices, I was thinking about writing some nice letters thanking them for their involvement and expressing my desire for an ordinance and/or statute covering EV signage. One of the council members, an attorney, drew up some estate planning paperwork for me last year. I thought about possibly contacting him and having a conversation.

I am very pleased with KCP&L, and others for making this initiative possible. I want signage (and legislation to back it up), but I also don't want any negative impressions from this rollout. Other municipalities and utilities are undoubtedly watching to see what happens here.

So, what did you think about the level 3.....awesome isn't it?

Hi Eric,
My tank was sitting at about 90% full, so the bump to 98% was great, but after that the wait was too long for the 2% and I was doing errands. The only station working was the library one.

I agree with you on the signage and a lot more work needs to be done on the part of the powers that be to coordinate that and mark the parking spaces, so I would be pleasantly surprised to see action soon. This is just a temporary stick-on with really weak tape, so they may not stay and anyone can remove them. If you feel they will impede what's in the works for signage and striping of parking spaces, you are welcome to remove them. I have no problem with that and don't want them to become an issue.

If stations aren't working, perhaps the host site isn't aware of it, since most staff don't seem to be aware of their existence. Hopefully KCPL will resolve all these problems before people get too comfortable blocking unmarked spaces/units.

The Hen House DCQC is operational (87th and Lackman)

<edit> so is the Barnes and Nobel @ Town Center (take Roe exit off i-435)

I've noticed several other stations that were broken are now working as well. I wonder if they are now getting fixed finally.

Now, all we need are signs and/or painted spots.

We ventured out to St. Joseph today for a family day trip. After discussion with my wife and kids about the perils of chargers, we decided to leave the minivan at home and take the LEAF.

To make a long story short, the new HyVee DCQC is DOA. Green LED bar on the bottom, but other than a beep, unresponsive to the ChargePoint card. A call to ChargePoint did not improve the situation. PlugShare has my entry.

Plan B was to go to Rolling Hills Nissan, who were extremely friendly and responsive. We plugged in most of the day and they even gave us a ride to and from the Pony Express Museum on the courtesy shuttle.

Mark, the LEAF specialist deserves special recognition. I'm glad some Nissan dealers even have salespeople who are knowledgeable about the LEAF.

"To boldly go where no one has gone before" -- you are more adventurous than I!!!!!

With the DCQC @ HyVee on Barry Road, round trip KCI is easier. I spent 20 minutes at HyVee and got home with 2 bars left. It would have been -1 if I'd taken 435 instead of 635. They don't run over you on 635 for going 55.

Hello Leafers, I'm Henry!
I purchased my Leaf SL on November 25, 2014 and have enjoyed it immensely ever since I took delivery a few days later.

I posted the first set of pictures that you see on PlugShare for the three DCQC's in the Northland. Within 24 hours of posting the pictures I received an email from Eric inviting me to this forum. Thank you Eric for the invitation.

I finally made time to create an account today and started reading your postings from November 1, 2014 though today to see what I have missed. I figured anything older than that would be less relevant. That took a while (13 pages). I really enjoyed reading all of your postings, the pictures, and even the rants. I laughed when I saw my name in a post from 3/6/2015 "Henry gets around. Too bad we don't know him". Well, here I am.

It looks like many of you had a nice fall gathering and I look forward to attending a future event.

Hi Henry! Welcome to our little group (that was my 3/6 comment  ). Hope to see you around. Wave or beep if you see us in the wild. You may see me, Karl or Eric around Vivion, Antioch, Chouteau or N. Oak...and maybe parts northern chasing DCQC!

How do you like the quiet? Enjoy the EV grin! :D
