Hi Everyone,

I picked up my gen1 Leaf on Monday and i'm loving it.

I went to set up leaf spy but when i want to plug my dongle in there was already something in the socket.

Can anyone tell me what this is?

The car was effectively brand new when i bought it, it was pre-registered but only had 24 miles on the clock.

Any help or suggestions as to what it may be are most welcome.

Thanks

Ian

Hmm, the images didn't upload, try these links

Thanks

Shouldn't be there. Looks like someone already installed a canbus device of some sort. I see connections for power, ground, and the EVCAN. I would pop that lower panel and see what it connects to.

Yep! Follow that wire and let's see where it's going!

Here's the way to get those images to display on the forum. I chose "View Original", then used right click->"Copy Image Location". The link may or may not work for others or continue working.

I can't see pics but a lot of dealerships use on lot security systems that require a remote (salespeople have) to start inventory. The units get removed while the car is being prepped for delivery to buyer but sometimes the plug at the OBD 2 connector gets forgotten.

I would remove the bottom panel and see what's hiding under there. Also, check for a terminating end to the right of the cup holder under the dash. My guess is someone had a GID meter connected at one point.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

So I've put a call into the dealer and they don't seem to know what it is but they're going to speak to some of their technical guys to see if they know.

The wires go back towards the centre console but I can't see what they are connected to or where they go after that...

That's unusual. Just curious, how did that happen? Can you ask the previous owner?

I was told by the dealer that someone ordered 12 Leafs from Nissan UK but when they arrived they only took 6, and my car was one of the 6 left behind. So I am wondering if it was originally ordered to be part of a fleet and the thing was fitted by Nissan and has something to do with that, but I am just guessing.

The dealer said they'd call me back on Monday so I'll post more then if they give me any useful info.

I have not seen satellite tracking systems for fleet users, but it is the only logical explanation. If you really want to know, follow the wires and take pictures of what they go to. I am sure it will be a box with an antenna connected to that somewhere else in the car.

Unplug it for now. There should be no negative consequences. It might actually have some value on ebay if it is not to hard to remove. Or maybe if you can find the fleet company it was intended for, they might want to buy it back.

All Leafs already have the NSA package as standard equipment, so this is definitely not that!

A couple years ago, one LEAF was delivered to the buyer with a piece of factory test equipment installed in the trunk. The pictures are posted somewhere here on MNL, but I don't recall details of the wiring or if Nissan ever collected the removed box. Many organizations use orange wiring, connectors, and boxes to distinguish test additions from standard production, but your connector's color may just be a coincidence.

Edit: Found the related post. No definitive data except the pictures. http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5835&hilit=Test+box+in+trunk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
