I guess when you try to confront some people on their dogma their brains just shut down.

There is probably a scientific explanation for this...When people suffer e.g. strokes, sometimes they are paralyzed in the left or right side, but are not aware of it. When asked to move the paralyzed limb, they will rationalize about why they cannot do it,e.g." I cannot return your handshake, because my right hand is broken". The weird thing is, they are mentally "almost" normal, and they even might know that they had a stroke.

Anyway, I think you can condition your brain into states of denial, similar to the brain damage that you suffer during e.g. a stroke, where there is just no way out. Its a bit like the Matrix, they simply cannot think the "unthinkable". Hence any rational reasoning with such people might turn out to be utterly pointless.

FICA is not the unemployment system. FICA is the Social Security and Medicare systems.

The unemployment compensation system is administered by the federal government at the hightest level, but each state finances and runs its own system. In some states the entire funding comes from employers, in some states both employers and employees contribute.

Yes, it's very much the same as insurance - everyone (through their employer) pays into the fund, then those who need are paid from the fund.

Isn't the unemployment system - FICA - an insurance program that all contribute to? And social security - also insurance?

Thanks for this - my intent was to list them, not suggest they were the same.

As for the rest of you - thank you so very much. You've helped me fix some broken ideas and also validate others that I wasn't completely sure about. :)

SO - we have facts, and we have irresponsible 'sound bite' reporting, and we marketing-speak on all sides, and we have intentional misinformation. evnow has made clear in a couple of areas that folks that refute facts will not change their mind when confronted with facts. How in the WORLD can we cut thru the garbage messages and gather a 'critical mass' of folks pushing for truth?

I think this succinctly summarizes the problem.

Here are the results for today's House vote on HR 2560 "Cut, Cap, and Balance." My Rep (on team R) voted against it - I just fired off a 'thank you' email.

Happy with the way your rep voted? Let them know! ;)

Cantor says we should help the folks in Joplin, MO - but not unless we can reduce Federal spending in other areas.

Right now, elephants from a Missouri circus are helping clear heavy debris from the tornado. Which means, when it comes to helping the residents of Joplin Missouri, actual elephants are more useful to them than the GOP.

Andy, I'm surprised that you didn't know Gabby Giffords DID vote and she voted in the affirmative.

Sorry - I thought she voted on the debt ceiling bill. It was great to see her back!

Bill Mahr on a number of topics. Some language - caution at work.

My favorite is Bachmann's recent proclamation that our problems today are due to the Renaissance and that we were better off in the God-fearing Darks Ages that preceded it... In the Dark Ages she would have been burned as a witch!

I am SO SORRY! Caffeine abuse!

Mission accomplished for Wednesday.

Now...if George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln (or other past statesmen who played a significant part in building this great country) met Bill Mahr, what do you suppose they would say?

IMHO, they'd probably laugh like hell and then have him put in a looney house.
