I would think someone with a graphic on the drivers door would be more tuned in with how the world works.

The logo is for a "Local Use Vehicle". I think it is sort of a car sharing thing, but I'm not really sure. If it is, then the Leaf is probably not her regular car, so she would not necessarily know what a Supercharger is, just that the nav system said to drive in here to charge.

I guess there is a L2 charger somewhere else in the lot, so the nav system worked, but the big Supercharger site is what the driver found and not the lonely L2 on the wall in the corner of the lot.
Ah, well OK then. I would have been hugely embarrassed for Nissan if their navi was listing SuperChargers.

Thought I'd present a total of SC stalls at this point and update as necessary, 'cause it's getting way too tedious to type them all in repeatedly. The states are listed in the order they appear on the official web page, alphabetically but divided roughly west of the Mississippi first, then east. I've only included those which appear on the web page, leaving off some that are known to be open but not yet listed.

Edit: Per the 'Tesla Supercharger Confirmed' topic in the TMC forum as well as photos, corrected # of stalls at Hawthorne from 4 (as shown on Tesla's SC page) to 6, and also updated the Ca. and absolute totals from 12/77 to 12/79, and from 460 to 462.
Eau Claire, WI, with 6 stalls, and the temp site at Bethesda, MD, with 2 are now listed, so trips between Chicago-Twin Cities and Glen Allen-Newark are now doable in winter by S-60s.
As of 2/4/14, Yuma, AZ with 8 stalls is officially online. As expected, the rate of new SCs coming online has dropped off considerably since the X-C route was completed. While they don't have to maintain the pace of 23 SCs they brought online in January, Tesla will need to average about 15/month for the rest of the year if they are to meet the 'by 2014' map total.
As of 2/13/14, Pleasant Prairie, WI is listed and mapped, so 75.

Totals updated to 27/75/486.

Last year Nissan made a big splash when they said that they would install 500 CHAdeMO stations in the next year in USA. It would appear to me that they are no where near that goal.

Now that Tesla has 486 QC stalls in USA, it seems obvious to me who has this figured out and who is still scratching their ***.

All of these SC locations are open 24x7 and almost none of the CHAdeMO locations are open all night long.

Comments anyone ?

On a lighter note, for those who aren't aware of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daW9XmG9krc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not to forget last August's

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkvYvk8vxuw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

On another issue, Tesla updated the coming soon map as of the 28th (I think); apparently someone realized that they needed to get I-15 from Las Vegas to SLC opened fairly quickly, along with connecting I-70 to I-15. Also, connecting Atlanta up with Richmond along I-85 and southwards to Florida, with I-75 in FL getting a couple of SCs, has also been moved up. Primm, NV has also reappeared, thanks to much pressure from owners.

They were talking about opening one SC per workday this year, so they're well behind that pace since they finished the first transcontinental route. Who knows how much of that is due to the heavy winter, and how much to other factors.

As of 2/20/14, Las Vegas, NV with six stalls is listed and mapped. Nevada is out of alphabetical order because Tesla's Supercharger website lists alphabetically by state abbreviation, and I wanted to use the same order here. I wonder which location will get them to 500?

As of 2/24/2014, Aurora, IL west of Chicago with 4 stalls is listed and mapped, total now 77. No one knew about this one. One more location should get them to 500 stalls.

As of 2/28/14, Lone Tree, CO with 4 SC stalls is listed and mapped, total now 78 with 500 stalls.

As of 3/11/14, Plymouth, NC with 8 stalls is listed and mapped, total now 79. They were talking about opening one SC per workday this year, so they're well behind that pace since they finished the first transcontinental route. Who knows how much of that is due to the heavy winter, and how much to other factors.
As of 3/16/14, Green River, UT with 4 stalls is listed and mapped, total now 80.

Totals updated to 28/80/512.

"Now that Tesla has 486 QC stalls in USA, it seems obvious to me who has this figured out and who is still scratching their ***."

Like who cares!!!!

Tesla MUST provide SCs or the MS would have marginal success based on their range promotions
and marketing, i.e. what's the value for Nissan and an equivalent to installing SCs when the present
range ~ 90 miles (Nissan SCs every 75 miles, right)? Please!

Nissan LEAF "SC"/DCFCs would need to be more like every 50 miles to help in areas where the capacity has decreased (hot areas or after a few years in mild areas) or people were driving on highway speeds for little stretches to get around bigger cities.

It's no big secret to "figure out"...

Tesla is writing some very big checks to get these stations in place. They are paying for everything, including the land leases.

Other manufacturers aren't willing to or can't afford to spend the money, so they have to go the route of cost share with hosts (tough sell), grant money (lots of rules), get dealers to play (some are unwilling, etc.).

Anyone could come along tomorrow and write a big enough check and it would get done.....No mystery there...

Seems like it is more than that as they have a sustainable plan including using parts from the cars (chargers, batteries) and solarcity connection for smoothly integrated solar panels, etc, etc.

Tesla Motors, Inc. Supercharger (SC) Announcement
May 30, 2013 at 10:30 AM PT
Rough Transcript

3. Do you have any cost figures you can provide? At the original introduction, you had a ballpark for each station. Has the timetable accelerated a little bit (vs. 100 ...)?
Yes, it has [accelerated]. Cost is approximately what we first estimated, roughly $150K per station in expenditures without solar. And another $150K with solar. We'll probably be at the 100 station mark next year. About twice as fast as originally planned.

5b. Explain how the solar works for the stations that do have solar?
The general principle is that we want to generate more energy from the sun over the course of the year than used by Model S at the SCs.
Most SCing on Friday afternoon and evening. Low usage during the week.
The solar panels are generating power throughout the course of the week. Cumulatively adds up to more than the cars consume.
We actually have grid storage going on at some of our supercharging stations. Stationary battery packs that take in energy through the week, through the solar panels. The solar panels charge the battery pack, and then that stationary battery pack charges the Model S battery pack. Capable of going completely off-grid.
These stations will operate even if the national grid goes down.
(Joking) Zombie apocalypse you'll still be able to charge with the SC system.

5c. Solar panel location?
Above the SC parking stalls. Examples at Tejon and Hawthorne. Over time we'll have that at all SC stations. Takes longer for panel installation.
Side benefit: carport, shielded from sun and rain while charging.

6. How much of an issue has reliability been on the SCs?
Need to make sure we have a lot of parking spaces available. SC has the ability to route power to multiple parking bays. Currently 2, but will be upgrading to 4. [some 8-10] Need to make sure there's always an excess of stations.

6b. Unmanned stations. Any issues with people showing up and it not working?
Multiple stations, redundancy. Minimum of 2 at each station. Thus, at least 4 parking bays. It's fairly unlikely that 2 or more would be down.
Superchargers...stacking a whole bunch of chargers designed for the cars. Twelve chargers inside. Redundancy. On failure power is reduced, rather than [offline].

10. Solar, superchargers, grid storage. Which percentage of SCs will have the solar component? Which percentage with have grid storage with that solar?
Long-term, all of them. Just a matter of time. In order to expand rapidly, install without them and backfill over time. Solar lag behind SC installation 12-18 months. Grid storage 6-12 months after that.

10b. Solar before storage?
Yes.

10c. How many grid storage so far? How big are they?
Two in operation now. Pretty sizeable. Half MWh. Capable of putting out a MW if need be.

10d. Where?
Rather not say so people don't futz with them. California.
Grid storage is a helpful thing because it offers a buffer to the grid. They like.

13. Clarification on number of SC plugs now vs. this year, EONY.
Don't have the number handy. One thing that's not obvious: in addition to new stations, we're increasing the number of ports at existing stations.
Example: Harris used to have just 1 port. Now it has 10. Not reflected in the map.

13b. [Followup question about impact of ports increasing]
Two to three thousand [charging] ports... (once 200 SCs rolled out ... at 10+ parking bays)

Anyone aware of Supercharger locations that have J1772 or CHAdeMO service onsite or nearby?

For bringing electric service to some remote locations, I have heard Tesla is looking to share the expense with governments or networks that are installing L3 and L2 stations. However, I don't yet know of any working examples of this.

Gilroy Premium Outlets has J1772 L2s (went in first) near the SCs. I know some other SCs in malls and the like have them as well, but I don't recall where.

The Darien, CT southbound service plaza on I-95 has 2 CHAdeMO units in addition to the Tesla SuperChargers that are there. The CHAdeMOs were installed months later, so I'm not sure if there was any collaboration on Tesla's part.

I do not believe Tesla has participated in an CHAdeMO or J1772. There are a number of sites where there were already other chargers nearby, or where other chargers have been built nearby.

"Other manufacturers aren't willing to or can't afford to spend the money, so they have to go the route of cost share with hosts (tough sell), grant money (lots of rules), get dealers to play (some are unwilling, etc.)."

There's NO point (value/benefit) for OEMs, e.g. Nissan, to do what Tesla has done given the present
target market & range, i.e. a city car which is typically only charged at night used for commuting!

As mentioned, it would really make sense to have a Leaf SC ever 50-75 miles, right?
