I'm just happy to see more mainstream EVs coming to fruition. I don't care if it's the Bolt, New Leaf, Tesla X, or any other vehicle from any other manufacturer, it's great to see the revolution progressing.
+1. If we step back from the trees (yes, and the LEAFs), the forest is definitely changing its hue. And no sooner than you know it, Thanksgiving will be upon us! ;-)

Backpedaling on the name

It's so conversational

I don't care what they call it, as long as they build and sell it. Heck, I don't even really care if it's ugly. Case in point, I own a Leaf ;).

I'm a fan of Nova, but the urban legend about the name in Spanish speaking countries still circulates - see http://spanish.about.com/cs/culture/a/chevy_nova.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We've seen multiple reports of EPA 200 miles - so even though we haven't heard about actual kWh of the battery used, it might still become a reality.

But ee'll have to see how Bolt's price holds up. I still remember Lutz saying Volt will be priced below $30k - and this was before any federal tax incentive laws were passed.

That "about.com" article sounds like it was cribbed from snopes.

As long as no forward-pedaling is required to reach 200 miles, I'm fine with a name change. ;-)

Re: about.com vs snopes, plagiarism is a no-no, a no go and a non-starter! :)

  • (Maybe that's why snopes used to post their write-ups as images, something I noticed
    had changed last time I was there. Being mobile-friendly might have necessitated it.)

Sorry if this has already been covered but I wonder how many people recognize the Bolt in the background of the new series of Chevy ads? Funny that GM would place it almost in the center, although in the back and not in sharp focus. My sense is that they are trying to generate interest in the car, knowing that we have at least 18 months until it is ready for sale to the public. Keeps it in peoples' eyes, makes those who know EV's hopeful that there really will be a 200 mile EV, and for those that do not know EV's, might make them wonder what car it is. Almost, to me, as if they are hoping to keep interest alive so that Tesla's Model III seems to have a viable contender.

I think GM looks at Bolt as the tech halo car. Just a corporate ego booster ...

I'm sure tough questions are being asked in all major automakers as to why Tesla could build their Model S - but not the OEM product team.

The battery's required size is easy to calculate - assuming 4 mi/kWh, that's 50 kWh usable to make 200 miles EPA, so figure it will be in the 55-60kWh total capacity range. Of course, if they can make the car very light and toss the mirrors for cameras they might be able to do better, but I'm not holding my breath for either. I consider 200 miles EPA to equate to 2 hours at 65-70 plus a reserve in average conditions, when new.

Yes, about 150 miles in most conditions. That makes one hour drives possible - without QC at the other end. For us this covers most of Seattle metro in winter.

Or 300 miles with only one stop. Not practical with a leaf, stopping for lunch and to charge doesn't sound so bad, but five lunches in one day is a bit much.

Much although not all of the Bay Area, too. But it will be the ability to get up to Tahoe or Yosemite in winter with a single QC stop east of Sacramento plus another one or an L2 on arrival, or to go non-stop to Monterey/Carmel, that I think will be the driver of mainstream acceptability here. Even though local driving is far more common, pretty much everyone has been to Tahoe or Monterey for a weekend at some point.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-shows/detroit-auto-show/news/a24761/musk-tesla-model-3-will-be-cheaper-than-chevy-bolt/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Musk points out that Chevy's claimed $30,000 price tag assumes the $7500 federal tax incentive for zero-emissions cars, putting the vehicle's true price at $37,500. The Model 3, Musk insists, will come in at $35,000 before any incentives, meaning buyers will only be on the hook for $27,500. And that's before any additional state-based incentives.

Interesting that Musk is talking about a supposed difference of $2.5k. So, may be Tesla will price Model 3 (basest of base version) at $35k.

A little smaller than I thought it would be (see picture of it behind the F150 truck). More "hot hatch" than CUV.

The camouflage isn't doing it any favors but it is very cool to see Chevy actually working on this. Competition will drive the EV industry forward!

I wish it was a hot hatch. But my impression is that it is a "tall compact" hatch, much like the Spark or Sonic hatchbacks. The proportions of these cars is just awkward.

It is great that they are out there testing it. It boosts my confidence that GM is serious about producing this car. Of course, leaks have been coming out of GM for years now that they've been working on it. I hope this is serious competition with Leaf 2.0.

And while I never got the impression that the Bolt would be a CUV, I wish that someone would build one. A 200-mile CUV or even a PHEV CUV would be a smash hit if they could reach the right price point...

Yeah, looks very similar to the C-Max, i3 and LEAF in overall dimensions.
