Are plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) sales really disappointing?

In a new blog entry, "Managing EV Expectations," Luskin Center Electric Vehicle & Alternative Fuel Initiative Director Brett Williams responds to characterizations in the media of PEV sales with an analysis of the U.S. data through January 2013.

In contrast to recent pieces by Reuters and others, PEV sales may not be as disappointing as you might think, based on realistic expectations. For example, the first three years of PEV sales are outpacing sales of hybrids when they were introduced in 1999-2001. The Chevy Volt is outselling half of the vehicles on the market (many vehicles are sold at low volumes), and plug-in sales have tripled from 2011 to 2012 (though from a small base). They could help by lowering charging rates on campus. Currently @ $2/hr and a hefty parking fee.

Lowering fees is an unknown concept to Universities, so no this will never happen. Consider it an important part of a well rounded education.
