remember it was passed during Bush administration

But the climate is different now . The oil industry and the NADA have woken up to the fact that EVs can and will be a success, and it is only a matter of time before they will be self sustainable without any need for Govt. life support

During the Bush administration they really didn't care and ignored the new kid in the block, but now they know the threat is real and taking the life support off now is a sure bet to kill it.

So the next time around with oil-friendly senate and congress, it will be a different battle.

Ofcourse, climate is different now. But only for issues that become partisan for some reason.

You can see some EV related subsidies in red states, for eg.

I don't really think Oil industry or NADA is worried about EVs that are less than 1% of the market. NADA is only worried about Tesla creating a "slippery slope" that lets other OEMs to sell direct.

Re: tax credit phaseout, one can look at the Toyota and Honda non-plugin hybrid examples at https://web.archive.org/web/20110614145926/http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/tax_hybrid.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I bought my 06 Prius in January 06, right when the $3150 tax credit began.

The other day, I noticed that http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/IRC-30D-Plug-In-Electric-Drive-Motor-Vehicle-Credit-Quarterly-Sales" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; says "2011-2013 Nissan Leaf" Cumulative Sales to Date are 72,294 with "Page Last Reviewed or Updated: 02-Sep-2014".

Not sure this is the best place for this news ("New Roadster Can Travel 400 Miles On A Single Charge, Tesla Announces"), but I didn't want to start a new thread:

First article says the 3 will be available in 2017. Realistically, when, maybe 2020?

By 2017 they probably mean 2018 model available in late 2017. And then tack on about a year of delays. But 2020 will be early if they try to put gull-wing doors on the thing.

I don't think they will do that. I bet they get those off the X in some kind of mid-cycle refresh. Those doors look cool, but they are just not practical.

Why even speculate about the Model 3, when the Model X hasn't been released yet? :?
For fun? Because some of us can't afford the Model X or Model S and are hopeful that the Model 3 will turn out to be "affordable", relatively speaking? Because this is the Model 3 thread and can be ignored by anyone who isn't interested in it (for whatever reason)?

The Model S came out in 2012, if the Model X comes out in 2015, then I guess 2018. That maybe a to soon if the Model 3, doesn't use as many of the Model S-X components.

Edited to correct my brain fart.

That's my thought as well. We might well see the 3 come out with the third generation Leaf.

If the Model X doesn't come out until 2017, Tesla will be dead and buried. They have to get it out this year; unlike the Model S, they already have two roughly comparable luxury plug-in CUV/SUV competitors (Porsche and Volvo) plus a down-market one (Mitsubishi), with more on the way.

If PHEVs are competition, then Model S has a lot of competition ... like ELR. Wait ... do you work for GM ?!
