Hey All: So decided to take the Leaf up to visit friends in Santa Rosa. We knew we could get about 4.5 hours of trickle charge while there. Total trip distance -- house to house -- 110.9 miles. We live in Berkeley . . . so called Santa Rosa Nissan to see if I could drop in for an L2 charge, just in case, and they were very accommodating -- told me I could drop in anytime before 7pm (on Saturday). Arrived at friends with 3 bars and 22 miles to go and plugged in for trickle. Checked Carwings on my blackberry (twice! Wife about killed me :p ) and saw we were charging, but too slowly. We arrived at 6:30pm at Santa Rosa Nissan and they couldn't have been friendlier! We plugged in to their easily accessible Aerovironment charger (they have 4 chargers together out in the lot) and spent a half hour yakking with David, their Leaf rep. and a nice guy. Left with 5 bars and 47 miles -- not ideal to get back to Berkeley -- better would have been 60 miles. Anyway, we take off, and by the time we got to San Rafael we had 7 miles to go and low battery warning. My wife was adamant that we NOT cross the Richmond/San Rafael bridge without more "fuel" so we pulled off with the idea of a hour of trickle charge somewhere. Asked two gas stations and one of them -- the Shell station on 2nd street in downtown San Rafael -- agreed to let us plug in. They have an third-party ATM machine in front of their store that is plugged into a two-socket plug with the upper plug available. We plugged in and pulled out some reading, got some water, and talked to three different groups of people interested in the Leaf and what we doing. Told them all the Leaf is the real deal and time to start thinking seriously about changing over. Spent 45 minutes and then took off with 9 miles and one bar. At 8 miles got low batter warning with the nice lady letting us know along with other indicators. We crossed the bridge with 4 miles and one bar, but as soon as we got past the refinery, got zero bars, three flashing lines where the miles read out, and the nice lady telling me my battery was seriously low and did I want to find a charging station? I pressed "yes" and she gives me three options -- the closest of which is my own home at 3.9 miles. I selected this and she sets a course for home with zero bars and three flashing lines. We get off at Buchanan and when we reach Marin and San Pablo Ave., the dreaded Turtle appeared. We kept going and when we pulled up to Francis and Santa Fe, the car went into "golf cart" mode. We made it to the top and coasted down to our house, pulled into the drive way and plugged in! YES!!! Very much enjoying my victory gin and tonic!

That was cutting it close! Yes, indeed, as I too discovered, the turtle does not like to climb hills. I hope you find a way to thank your wife for her instinct about the bridge. Obviously you stayed on 580 to Buchanan. Did you give any thought to taking Cutting and San Pablo instead? My first instinct is to get off the freeway as soon as reasonable when I get 'low battery', let alone 'very low battery'. I'm not sure whether my instinct is correct, though.

Yes . . . too close. I still thinking about the best way to thank my wife as there are always so many reasons to do so :p . Didn't consider getting off the 580 earlier as I was totally focused on what would be fastest (ICE mindset, I suppose). Good question though . . . not sure what would be best.

Good thing about getting off the free way is - you can go slow. Quite slow.

Also, if you do run out of charge, you don't get stranded on freeway.

ps : If you had Enginer's mod and plugged in your friend's dryer 220v - that would have been ideal.

Indeed . . . thought about that a bit wistfully having read the various threads on adapting the trickle charger to 220-240 volts. We have a lease though, so probably won't do this. Actually, travel quite a bit for business to Europe so thinking of asking a Nissan dealer near where I work if they would sell me a Nissan 240 trickle charger

I didn't let that stop me. I figure that somebody in my local LEAF group or on the forum will be happy to trade a stock one for my modded one in the highly unlikely event I don't buy the car at the end of the lease.

Also, word is that the Euro trickle charger is only 10 amp.

I asked a Nissan LEAF specialist salesman about whether modding the L1 EVSE (a la Ingineer) would be a problem at lease-end and he said no it wouldn't, that we haven't modified the car, so there wouldn't be a problem. Now, that's just one LEAF specialist/salesman's opinion, though he said that he did check it out with someone higher up, but take it for what it is.

Hi All, I'm the newbie. Just got my Leaf SL in Ocean Blue, S/N: 4933 on June 25. Lots of people asking the same ????'s. But many want a test drive. All are very impressed with quietness, ride quality but mostly performance (they think golf cart). I have about 200+ miles so far. I have a 12 mile round trip to work and back. I have experimented with charging, 2x to 100% and 1x to 80%.

Starting SOC : 80% and 100%
Range (till battery low) : 74 miles
Range (till turtle) : Have not seen yet
Efficiency : Averaging 4.9 miles/Kwh in ECO mode
Driving : 74 mile round trip yesterday for Dr. appt. Got home with 15 miles showing @ 80% SOC. Longest trip so far. Should have charged to 100% before leaving home. Range anxiety started creeping in
Climate : Ran A/C there, Intermittant A/C use coming home

My 1995 Geo Metro 96 volt electric conversion is starting to get a little dusty sitting in the garage. Will sell it soon and recoup some expenses for the Leaf.

My daily commute + lunch is about 70-75 miles. Then a bit more if I need to do errands or we go out to dinner. So far the lowest I've ever gotten is down to 9 miles remaining.

I still haven't gotten to turtle mode, not that I want to. :)

We're going to try going to the beach at some point, which is about 55 miles one way. And over the Coast Range mountains. I'm thinking we may need to stay overnight and trickle charge somewhere in order to get back up the pass on the way back, but I'm excited to try it out.

Has anyone found out if using non-certified charging systems will void homeowners insurance in case of a fire? Between that and warranty concerns, and the free EVSE and $700 rebate for participating in the EV project, I have decided to steer clear of mods for charging for now and focus on the 240 Blinc at home. Keeping my fingers crossed for the QC's, even L2 is too slow for long distance driving.

Total Miles Driven : 78
Date: 6-21-2011
Condition: Battery Low
Terrain: ~60miles freeway, rest city
Speed: 80% 65+mph, 20% 30mph
Weather: 70 degrees, windows open no A/C
Mi/KWh: 4.1 Leaf

Maiden voyage, 80 miles. I picked up my LEAF from Gladstone Nissan on 7/6/11, set cc @ 55 mph, about 75 degrees out, no climate control, very little eco, went through the Columbia Gorge, up 800 feet @ the end of my trip to make it home, near the North side of Mt. Hood. I did about 6 miles @ 40 mph. Arrived home with 4 miles range left.

As much as I love Leaf - your post is scary. I would rather drive a Prius, than be forced to pull off for 45 min fuel-ups, and still hardly make it home. Ain't worth taking Lead on long trips.

I'm struck by the fact that one QC somewhere on the route would have made it a completely different experience. A 10-20 minute stop would have left him with extra range to do more than nurse it home. As far as scary...he was obviously TRYING to push the envelope...if he had been truly concerned he would likely have driven something else.

We may end up with a new sport, sort of a rally for electric cars. Setup a 100 mile course and the Leaf Team that gets there first wins. A fun event for a Leaf club and it wont take all day. Make sure you have an L3 charger at the start and finish lane... and a navigator for safety :D

with Ikea, Best Buy and Walgreens to install charging stations at their stores, this whole range obsession is just going to evaporate, except for just plain poor planning.

I'm still surprised Starbucks hasn't jumped on to this - they would be the ideal location.

I hadn't seen walgreens announcement - how many stores are they installed EVSEs ?

Could have easily beaten the EPA 73 mile range today - covered 68 miles with 9 bars effectively used up. With a full charge and using up a couple of more bars would have made 80 miles comfortably.

Total Miles Driven : 68 (ECO mode)
Date : Aug 6, 2011
Leaf End Condition : Started with 11 bars and ended with 2 bars left (14 miles est range)
Route / Terrain : Pleasanton -> via 680/24 -> Tilden Park (Inspiration point, ~1000ft -> Berkeley dwntn -> via 80/580-> Pleasanton. Lots of elevation changes on Wildcat canyon Rd and Dublin grade on the return
Speed : range of speeds from 25mph to 60mph
Weather : temps 18-25C, no climate control used
Miles/kWh : did not measure
