For those not in the know, Carlos is the head of Nissan (CEO).

Interesting. For some reason, I thought Carlos already spoke Japanese.

There was a video of him addressing the Oppama workers as they began production. He did communicate in Japanese, but quite haltingly. I have no idea if he had some grasp of the language or if he was just pronouncing the words phonetically. But either way it seemed quite an effort and showed a lot of respect to communicate directly in their language without an interpreter.

I haven't watched the video yet, but from what I understand, he knows some business Japanese. From what I recall, besides Ghosn being able to speak English, he also knows French, Portuguese, supposedly Arabic and possibly one more language.

Here's one video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eefsRBkjgIk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; of the Leaf "offline" ceremony. I saw it awhile ago and thought the words "offline" were a bit odd. I guess it's just Engrish.

(I later saw http://www.autoblog.com/2012/03/16/subaru-brz-and-toyota-gt-86-production-gets-underway-w-video/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, which had a "line-off ceremony" for the "Toyobaru".)

edit: I watched the video. Thanks for the link to the story and video. Interesting. I'm guessing that Ghosn probably is FAR more comfortable in English than he is speaking Japanese. I'm guessing he can understand enough Japanese to get by or confirm his interpreter is right but speaking it for long periods of time and having enough vocabulary might be tough for him.
