what happens if the 12v accessory battery dies?

I was thinking the SAE-J1772 would supply 12V standby power. However, that's a square wave of high impedance, so not sufficient for trickle charging. Really? Someone designed this in 2000 and didn't include aux power? Why is everything so broken !?

what happens if the 12v accessory battery dies?

Thanks, DarkStar! I'm still quite frustrated (as a consumer) and surprised (as an engineer) that the battery will die while the car is plugged in -- and so quickly...

what happens if the 12v accessory battery dies?

I went on a trip for two weeks, leaving the car in the garage with the regular charger plugged in. After about a week, the car started sending "charging complete" once an hour. After being annoyed by that for two days, I turned off updates of charging status to my phone. When I came home, the...

    carwings smsing every hour?

My "solution" was to turn off charge ended notifications through the remote control. Not great, but at least it won't wake me up. My bet is they did some upgrade/change on the back end, and didn't have enough testing to make sure it worked when deployed...

    carwings smsing every hour?

I left the car plugged in when leaving for vacation. I would expect to get the 9am message that charging is complete that I get every day because I keep the timer on 8% all the time. However, a few days ago, it started pointing me once an hour for twelve hours or so. And each morning at nine am...

    Odd brake system failure

At the suggestion of Nissan, the dealer swapped the speed sensors between two locations, to isolate wiring problems vs sensor problems. The dealer kept the vehicle for a week, trying to drive it 30 minutes each day to reproduce the problem, and could not reproduce it. I got the vehicle back last...

    Odd brake system failure

I left the car at Sunnyvale Nissan Sunday (key drop.) Monday, they call me, and see there are codes for a wheel sensor, but can't reproduce the problem. Nissan tells them to call it good and send it home, so I picked it up Monday afternoon. On my way to work Tuesday morning, same problem again...

    Odd brake system failure

I think this just happened to me. On the freeway the cruise control stopped working and I got abs, traction, and brake warnings (all yellow) and the visit dealer notice. It's Sunday so service is closed and I gotta call my wife to pick me up. More later.

    What's the battery maintenance interval?

It's Boardwalk Nissan Redwood City, which is down the street from where I live. The next nearest one is Nissan Sunnyvale; maybe I'll try that one for when I need the next yearly battery reading.

San Francisco Charging Stations - Know of any?

The Fifth/Mission garage has 4 parking spots with 3 Chargepoint L2 chargers, right at the entrance. When you exit, you actually have to go up one floor, drive around to the exit ramp, and down again. I've never found all four taken at the same time, and I've only seen any of the ICEd once. Yes...

    What's the battery maintenance interval?

When I brought my Leaf in for one-year maintenance, the dealer said that Nissan now wants to see the car every 6 months to check the battery, rather than the 1 year that's in the instruction manual. I haven't heard this from Nissan themselves. Is this the dealer trying to get paid more, or is...

    Additional batteries?

That seems to be the general weight of pouch-style cells. You'd need to form a hard case around them with some aluminum sheet or whatever, but that should add minimal weight. For example, Tenergy 20 Ah 3.2V cells weigh 545 grams...

    Additional batteries?

I'm familiar with the plasma arcs, thanks! This came from accidentally and briefly shorting the wires on a 4S LeFePO4 pack while stripping them with a pocket knife. That blade isn't what it used to be ;-) The nice thing with LiFePO4 is that lifetime is much better than LiPo. Also: significantly...

    Additional batteries?

I could spend $5k and get about 400V/8kWh worth of LiFePO4 batteries into the trunk. (Wouldn't actually take all of the trunk) If I went LiPo, it would actually be cheaper for the same energy storage. This could conceivably extend range by about 30%. I can see a zillion problems with this :-)...

    Finally got me some edumacation!

See, that's what I'm talking about! There are other similar vehicles from vendors like VW or M-B, too. A while back, some Toyota exec was saying "you'll see hybrid versions of all Toyota vehicles" and I was hoping for a hybrid Sienna. No such luck :-( At this point, I may go Diesel. Not so much...

    Finally got me some edumacation!

I was not aware of the calculation changes; that does explain some of the changes. Thanks for the links! But, really -- I recently heard a Chevy Tahoe Hybrid billed as a "gas sipper...." At 20/23 mpg. I don't need 250 hp. I think 125 hp would be fine. I don't particularly need 5000 lbs of...

Cost for the optional 6.6kW charger in the 2013 Leaf

That is unfortunate. Any details on why? It seems like something like that could be made as an after-market part, although installation would be tricky. Also: I wonder if I can buy 96 LiIon cells from China to extend the range of my Leaf. At some point, that will become a kind of after-market...

    Finally got me some edumacation!

I drive the Leaf for commuting. My wife has the wagon for schlepping kids, and for longer family trips 1 or 2 times a year. The wagon is on its last legs. I'm looking for something with fairly simple requirements: Seats 6 + dog, 30 mpg or better. There exists nothing on the market that fulfills...

Cell Balancing - Does Charging to 80% Prevent it - Any tips?

In reality, 90 degrees Farenheit (30 degrees Centigrade) is "hot" for Lithium Ion. I'm in Northern California, and have to park outside at work, and we get that temperature in the summer. I trickle charge at work, and never to more than 80%, though, so at least it's not adding more heat.

Cost for the optional 6.6kW charger in the 2013 Leaf

A year back, Nissan was making noises of making the 6.6 kW charger available for the 2012 Leafs. Any news on that? You will note that the Ford Focus EV advertising claims "charges twice as fast as the 2012 Nissan Leaf" :-)
