Ontario increases EV incentive up to $14K!

Welcome to the world of dealers selling EVs. When I walked in there I knew more about about the car then the sales people did. They all try and pile on those extras because that's where they make your money. And be careful when you take it back for service. My dealer tried to get me to...

Are you a net producer or consumer of electricity?

We produce about 500kWh more a year then we use. In Ontario so we get paid a lot for all the electricity we produce.

    Proper EV Etiquette - Charging/Parking

In this lot the chargers are free and you are allowed to to park for as long as you pay for so their is no chance of getting towed/ticketed. If the signage stated that parking was only 4 hours or there would other rules I would follow them. I was just pointing out that with L2 chargers it...

    Proper EV Etiquette - Charging/Parking

With a quickcharger I can understand being right near there to move the car. With L2 it just might not be possible. For example we regularly drive to another city and park at a specific parking lot that has L2 EVSEs. We plug the car in and then take a ferry to where we want to go and...

    Windows 10?

Windows 10 does have a start button. You don't have to pay 15 to activate a DVD drive. The $15 is for a codec to play a DVD movie which you can get for free just about anywhere. Plus who even has an optical drive in their systems anymore let alone watches a DVD on it. The solitaire thing...

The Best, and Worst, Places To Drive Your Electric Car

In my 2014 when it is -4F (-20) and I really push it I can get close to 62 miles (100km) but to do that I will almost have to use no heat. But if if I want to be warm that easily becomes 45 to 50 miles. This is one of the reasons I leased. In our climate if you want any kind of buffer and...

    Why 200 miles??

People who say we don't need 200 miles of range need to qualify their statements to say they don't need 200 miles of range. If I was tooling around sunny California or another southern state then 85 miles of range might be enough but in a colder climate that 85 miles can turn to 65 or 55...

drove my Leaf at -13F this morning !

I have been lucky to only see 2 battery bars once this winter and most of the time it has 3. Car is garaged and pre-heated in the mornings. The car is now a year old and last summer I could pretty easily get 150km. When the temps get below -10c it is tough and I routinely bump into the...

    Why 200 miles??

For those living in cold climates the larger batteries are necessary to get reliable distance while using heat. While I am sold on EVs I really believe 200 miles is necessary for me so I can purchase the car and use it long term. 200 miles will give me the buffer I need where battery...

    New SL owner

I am in the GTA and with my 2014 I am able to do those distances if not more even down to -20. For example last week when the daytime high was -15c I was able to do around 90km getting home with 10 percent of battery. To do that I had to run with pretty much no heat the majority of the time...

My insurance company has a hybrid vehicle discount

In Canada my insurance company has what they call a green car discount which applied to my Leaf. I didn't know anything about it and got a letter about a month after i got the Leaf with and explanation and my new lower rate. Nice little bonus worked out to about 10 dollars a month cheaper.

Would you buy or lease a 150-200 mile Gen II EV?

My real reason to want a longer range EV is not that I really need the range for most of my trips (the leaf does fine for that) but so that I can use the car and original battery for 10 years without having to worry about degradation. If you add in winter driving with the batter degradation...

Would you buy or lease a 150-200 mile Gen II EV?

I also normally buy and drive for the longish term. But with the Leaf I leased to get me to 2017 and the longer range EVs at a decent price. My plan is to wait and see what is available then but if I can get at least a 200 mile EV at the price point I want I will buy it. Willing also to...

Timing of getting my next EV

My Lease is up Feb 2017 and I still think this will be too early for the Tesla 3 which was my end goal. If the next gen Leaf or another vehicle comes out and looks good it will be considered but I really want my next EV to be long range so I can keep it for a significant length of time. I...

    Stay Away from Nissan

Exactly the same dealership I used. Had a great experience with them and even though there were some issues they stepped up and did what they needed to. Nissan on the other had was not very helpful at all when I tried calling them. There are good dealerships like Oakville Nissan but they...

Goodbye Nissan Leaf, hello Kia Soul EV

I assume it is like the standard Soul. I wasn't impressed with how much space was behind the seats with them up. We took a trip and had a standard Soul as a rental. We travelled to the airport in the leaf with 4 of us (Wife, I and two kids) and all luggage. Got it no problem in the...

Brand New 2015 Leaf with only 56 Ahr!!!

Your efficiency is not all that high. In the middle of winter when it was -20 I was getting 5.5km per kWh. In perfect temps I get around 7.8km per kWh and right now I am getting 7.5km per kWh. I never drive in ECO and don't have a very light foot around the city. The killer though will...

Is this stuff fixed in the 2015 LEAF?

On my 2014 the driver washer nozzel still sucks. I had them adjust it twice and still the same issue. It shoots a stream instead of a fan and it is too low on the window. If you adjust it any higher it hits the edge of the hood.

Microinvertors vs. Single invertors, what's the difference?

Just to add to the confusion there are also power optimizer systems like Solaredge provides. Basically a power optimizer is installed on each panel like with a micro inverter but you also have a main inverter like with string system. You get the benefit of being able to monitor each panel...

    Any regrets owning your leaf?

no regrets about the car. It is perfect for our needs. The only thing I don't like about it is the washer nozzles which are really bad. In Canada they are important and I have had the dealership mess with them twice but they are really are no better.
