Nissan Crossover EV / Ariya concept

Mon Sep 09, 2019 8:56 am

I didn't see a thread on this yet, sorry if I missed it.

300 miles Range. So more than the Leaf Plus. I wonder what Tech they are talking about?

Those drawings scream "concept car that will never be built, even as a prototype." At least I hope that is the case. If it is built they will have to "un-squash" the roof...

Yes, that looks like a computer generated concept car....

We don't need a super sleek concept car as an EV... How about a nice Rogue or pathfinder EV? Or even a "Kicks"?

Yeah most cars look nothing like their concept, and it does say Murano and Rogue - like in the articles.

I was picturing something like a Lexus NX in my head.
But while the all digital console sounds cool, it also sounds pricey.

I'd be happy with a rav4 or CRV-like vehicle, nothing super fancy, that was 30k and went 400 miles.
Instead it seems like this might perpetuate the idea that EVs are for rich folks.

I do believe once all the makers switch over, cars will become more like lcd tv’s as their part structure simplifies and tech changes. Every gen will drive a lower price point.

This will push down prices....but in 15 years. That said, the 40 Leaf is same price as 2010 gen 1 24 Leaf.

I found an article from last year and they were extrapolating range based on the EVs from the last ten years. It predicted an average in the 200s by 2022 and near 400 by 2030 I think. Funny enough their data was already out of date, as then the max was 330 for Tesla, now 370.

So I dont know what that futuristic cockpit does to price but range should expand with price staying steady. Or that is the prediction.

To me that concept still looks like a more direct tesla fighter. Or Lexus. But then you think it would be infinity branded.

The news today seems to be Nissan's "new" plan is to sell expensive EVs.

That concept car we all say a couple months ago might have a price tag of 55 to 78 thousand dollars.

Personally I think this is a big mistake. It only reinforces to the average american that EVs are a rich person's toy.
I certainly wouldn't pay that much for a Nissan (it might end up being Infiniti) when I could go get Tesla or other alternatives.

Hiroto Saikawa, who served as Nissan’s chief executive for less than three years, stepped down in September. He said that price cuts and big sales targets tarnished the Leaf’s image. “What really destroyed Leaf’s product value was when we vastly cut the lease price for Leaf in the US. Since then, Leaf’s image is that of a discount car,” Mr. Saikawa said.
This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. They had to cut the price to make them sell. "Image" is worth something but at the end of the day, if it can't sell, its too expensive. I like my leaf because I got such a good price on it. If I had needed to actually pay sticker price - 37k - there is NO way I would have gotten it. The leaf interior is nothing special. He's talking like he thinks the leaf was someone premium. And even the standard leaf's range is now falling well behind competitors.

No wonder Nissan did so poor under his combines leadership.
Meanwhile, Uchida, who became Nissan’s CEO this week, wants to shift the focus of EV’s strategy from volume to profitability.
I would also add this "new" strategy makes no sense.
What we need is EXACTLY a car that is 25k that the masses can afford, descent quality, and goes 250-300 miles. A high volume EV.

As I posted at https://mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=584388#p584388
I downloaded the zip file on the right side of https://global.nissannews.com/en/releases/200528-03-e and inside the "MTP Presentation – Speech Talking Points.pdf" it says
In July, we will reveal the production model of our EV crossover called Ariya, shown as a concept at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. The Ariya has cutting-edge styling inside and out, high-technology content including ProPILOT 2.0, a choice of powertrains, and much more. We expect the Ariya to play a key role as a brand driver and the face of Nissan for the new era.
So far, it looks like the folks who speculated it'd go into production are right.

The rendering in the OP isn't ummmm very close to the Ariya concepts shown at Tokyo Motor Show 2019 and CES 2020. I pointed to some pics I took at CES at https://mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=576562#p576562.
