I am ready to push the axle back. It seems that the wheel should be turned so I can better see the hub area to be lubed but I hesitate to push the axle with the wheel at an angle. Also what about turning the wheel while on the jack? TY

If you don't have access to a lift, I'd get both front wheels off the ground with the car on jackstands at its specified lift-points (along the pinch welds where the emergency jack fits).

Then you can easily rotate the axle, turn the steering wheel, etc.

Never get under a car without a properly placed jackstand or two.

"Chock, jack, and block" was the advice I learned from John Muir's "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive".
  1. Chock one or both wheels at the opposite end to prevent the car from rolling backwards. (I always applied my parking brake when stopped so I have always skipped this step.)
  2. Jack the car up.
  3. Block: put a "block" under a solid part of the car in case the jack and/or the jack stands fail. I always put the tire(s) I take off the car under the sill behind the lift point.
