Well getting time to park the Leaf again. Summer camp all week starting Sunday.

I wish I only had to wait a week to drive my LEAF again. :mrgreen: I'm counting down the days and it's still around 40. I can't even live vicariously through the CarWings reports from the friend who's storing my LEAF, 'cause he's afraid to drive it lest he get a scratch on it. :evil:

I'm also looking forward to meeting some of you fine folks and getting to some of the MAEAA meetings.

Over 14,800 miles and counting down to the next tire rotation @ 15,000 miles and the cabin filter change (Fenton Nissan tried to upsell that to me early - not!). I may search the threads for the instructions to do it myself from inside the glove box. Their pricing was ridiculous...

Kathy, I plan on doing my own with the instructions I found here:

http://sfbayleafs.org/technical/diys/leaf-cabin-air-filter-replacement/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and

http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=13113" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you can hold out a bit longer until I get there, we could even do a filter group purchase (found some on eBay) and have a cabin filter clinic in the Northlands.

I used to do the wrenching on my VW Westfalia campers, so I think I can handle this.

Hey, I'm good with that, Karl! The small amount that I drive, you'll be here by the time my filter swap is due! Do you rotate tires, too? lol! :)

Rotating tires is easy...just drive down to the ice cream shop and they've gone through a number of rotations. :lol:

Seriously, I can do that, but I have to wait until all my stuff in storage from Michigan arrives at the house. There's a floor jack in there somewhere. I can't do wheel balancing or anything that requires specific tools.

Might cost you a six-pack of assorted Boulevard beers though. ;)

Brewskis it is, Karl! We might even have to turn this Northland Cabin Filter Clinic into a BBQ, Filters & Tire Rotation Clinic! :lol: One caveat...Brewski's to be consumed post-filter change/post-rotation, to avoid any LEAF catastrophies! :shock:

I was reading the first DIY thread you provided and it mentions 2 kinds of filters, the least expensive @ about $10. Wondering what the better one would cost in a group buy? If you have that info, that would be great. Looking forward to meeting soon. :)

I see that KC now has a listing on the National Drive Electric Week site:

https://driveelectricweek.org/events.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

so I plan to attend with my LEAF:

https://driveelectricweek.org/event.php?eventid=181" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm back...for 3 weeks...really good to be driving the Leaf again. Those gas things are annoying. On an EV front though there are 3 shiny new EVSE's in JOCO at our new office building. Each is a 2 cable EVSE and a shiny new ChargePoint screen. At least one of them is working because I plugged in. You do need a ChargePoint card but it is supposed to be free. They don't appear on the ChargePoint or PlugShare maps yet.

I got a free tire rotation at Fenton Nissan Saturday 6/14 (after they had tried to sell me that & a cabin filter change a couple weeks prior at my window problem appointment). A promo came in the mail for the rotation recently (glad I delayed it). Karl's off the hook for that now! :lol:

Now I just need a cabin filter change (odo rolled over 15K miles last week :) ). Karl, is that filter change offer still on the table? I'll go in on the volume filter buy, too. See you soon.

Sweet! I realized I was going to have to invest in another set of jack stands if you want to do a proper side to side rotation as well as front to back.

I went ahead and ordered a few off eBay and they're inbound to my friend's house that's storing my LEAF. If you can afford $8, one of those is yours. We'll have to determine whether it's good enough quality before I order more.

Gosh, Karl, I wouldn't have had you go to any extra expense for jack stands. I do have one from an Altima I carry in my car (should've been there in the first place, but didn't come with the car) plus I have a set of fairly new ramps that can be used if you need them. I read at one of the links you provided previously there were 2 filters, one being slightly better. Which one did you get?

Thanks,
Kathy

I ordered the TYC 800138P, similar to this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cabin-Air-Filter-TYC-800138P-fits-09-14-Nissan-Cube-1-8L-L4-/181404382249?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3ANissan%7CModel%3ALeaf&hash=item2a3c8b3429&vxp=mtr" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

To me, as long as the filter fits properly to avoid blow-by, the mesh isn't that critical. Just like a dryer lint filter, once a layer of dust forms on the filter, that first layer is what filters additional incoming particles.

Regarding the jack stands, there's a difference between the vehicle jack or even a floor jack and the jack stands. Here is an example of jack stands: http://www.harborfreight.com/3-ton-steel-jack-stands-61196.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Once you have the vehicle raised with a jack (a good resource here: http://www.electricvehiclewiki.com/?title=Jacking_up_a_LEAF" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), you should never rely on that to hold the vehicle up, particularly if you are working under it (which in this case we are not). If you are just taking one wheel off, the jack will do, but when you rotate, you are removing multiple tires.

I won't go into the philosophy of just rotating front to back versus a front or rear cross (there are separate threads here for that; here's one: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=9581" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), but assuming we are doing a front cross pattern (patterns shown here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=43" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), you need to raise all four wheels off the ground to do the tire swap without multiple raising and lowering of the vehicle.

Another option for a front cross pattern would be to do 3 lifts, each with 2 wheels off the ground:
1) Lift left side: swap front to back
2) Lift right side: swap front to back
3) Left front: swap side to side

As you can see, you'll be double-handling some of the tires, but in the absence of 4 jack stands, that could be a shade tree method of accomplishing the task.

If you can live without the side to side swap, then two lifts will do and there is no double handling.

Anyway, since yours is done, I'll gather my own experience on the tire rotation (mine is due) and we can focus on the cabin filter when we get together. Plus we can read your LEAFs OBD info with LEAF Spy.

Can you take some pics and add them to PlugShare and Open Charge Map (http://openchargemap.org/site/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)? I always love to see new EVSEs pop up. :)

Yes, but I'm going to wait until the building is officially open. The company may be doing something on its own and I don't want to jump on that. So we'll have to wait until the end of July. My move in date of course if while I'm at summer camp in July and I won't really be back to anything close to "normal" until around the 21st of July.

Dang...almost had it. Tried another 100 miler with a 2 year old battery. I almost made it. I've got 80 miles on the clock and 1 bar left. We know that 1 bar is actually closer to 16-20 miles of range but wife would freak out if we tried to take it on a 20 mile round trip tonight and I need a tick more than that in the morning. But it looks like it might still be possible. I did 60 miles just from the JOCO library on 87th street out to downtown Independence and back using only 8 bars. The math on that takes you to 90 miles and pushing it with the buried last bar but still doable it seems.

95th + i-435 to kci...can't do it on full charge with a 2 year old battery. I stopped at the Harley plant for 45 minutes and round trip was 70 miles. Got home with 3 miles on the gom and only low battery not vlb.
wouldn't have been able to make it without that stop at the evse.

If you have about $6000 and 3 days, you can have a brand new battery. Nissan just announced pricing for a replacement battery:

http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17168#p374490" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm willing to do some charges on the way for that price for a few more years. Then again, when this becomes my daughter's first car and I get a LEAF 2.0 in a few years, maybe limited range is not such a bad thing. :)

Definitely don't have the $6k with kid starting college. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be getting a new battery under warranty. It's just not hot enough around here to hit a 4 bar loss in less than 60k miles and 5 years.
