24kWh LEAF ONLY !!!! See the other thread for the new 30kWh LEAF.

Post your experiences with joining the 100 miles Club and 200 km Club; that is, driving 100 miles or even better, 200 km (124.3 miles) or more, without a charge. This is not estimated, or thought you could, or maybe you got close.... your car actually powered the wheels for 100 miles or more without a charge. Metric folks, it's the 160.93 km club and/or 200km. New requirement; your trip must start and end at the same elevation, or end at a higher elevation.

The GuessOmeter (dash readout of range) has nothing to do with this. Please don't even reference what that meter says. Only actual odometer reading. No CarWings data, either; even the latest firmware update has the mileage data 2.5% off

Here's how many people have reported going 100 miles that Nissan says the car can go, or even better, the 200 km that Nissan says the car is rated for in Japan:

*******************************

All time record holder, LEAFfan, drove his new 2013 LEAF for 188 miles on one charge on May 27, 2013 with economy of 8.8mile per kWh, relatively flat terrain, little wind, 75F to start in sunny Phoenix

LEAFfan's previous record from May 5, 2012 with a 2011 LEAF - (151 miles / 243 km), 8.5 miles/kWh center console (8.4 dash since it only goes to 8.0 on the readout) on ONE CHARGE. He could have done 170 miles if he had started with full capacity, instead of a calculated 17.976kWh (151 / 8.4 = 17.976).

2nd place: "TNleaf": Feb 7, 2012 - TNleaf with 135.4 miles (217.905 km). I forecast that he could have driven 146 miles, at 6.6 miles/kWh, for 22kWh usable battery.

******************************************************************

Lowest range contender, "nader": 0.8 miles per kWh over 6 miles; estimated range, 0.8 x 21 = 16.8 miles !!!

For me, I drove from Long Beach to San Diego, and covered EXACTLY 100 miles. 100% charge to Turtle mode.

****This run by Nick was done in Oct 2010, months before the first LEAF delivery. Because he drove 116 miles at 5.1 miles/kWh, that means there was 22.7kWh in the battery to use.

What was the ambient air temperature during this run ? We don't know, but considering when and where it was done, I don't think it was over 100F/40C. Because it was driven by a pre-production car, I suspect that the cell voltages were at 4.2v per cell, and not the 4.1v of the production car.

There are references in some of the documents to a 403v battery (96 cell pairs * 4.2v), but the current production car has about 21kWh available at 70F/20C temperature, and has 393.5v with 4.1v per cell. That capacity decreases about 1% per 4F/2C temperature decrease below 70F/20C.

Nick's calculated battery capacity of 22.7kWh (8% above 21kWh) is significantly above that standard, and could be explained either by higher cell voltage, or extreme battery temperature of over 100F/40C.

Tony, can you describe the trip in more detail? Did you have to pull out every hyper miler trick in the book to accomplish this milestone? Was the trip taken at 2AM with the roads to yourself? I'm hoping it was a more mainstream trek, but I look forward to your account!

It was from about 11:40pm until about 2:35am. Yes, I did have to dig for a trick or two!

Here's the link:

My thinking starting this thread is that there is NOTHING mainstream about actually driving 100 miles (that Nissan tosses around like sand on the beach). Heck, I'd like to see how many have actually done it of the many thousands of LEAFs in the USA now.

Sunland, CA to Santa Ana, CA and back- 103 miles. 5.7 miles below Very Low Battery warning.

Sunland to Santa Ana to La Canada- 103 Miles. Turtled and dead.

I'd love to be the first member of this club in Colorado! My 2012 Leaf is due in next month... :D

It will be a big disappointment if this turns out to be a short thread - but not unexpected.

Nissan initially marketed the LEAF as a nominal "100 mile range" car. Even made claims of 135 miles+ under "ideal" conditions.

It's sad to see so few able to actually get to, and beyond, the 100 mile barrier.

Thank you for the link to your trip, Tony, but honestly I was hoping for an easier run of it...

I am taking away some great lessons on the importance of good planning and the need to truly understand the limits of this vehicle to enjoy it fully.

In preparation of my Leaf's arrival, I have been tracking my daily mileage for months now, and I've only twice accumulated more than 70 miles in a day, and I knew well in advance of those trips. So, I would have opted for my wife's ICE on those occasions.

I hope that my reasoning is sound, but I'm fairly confident that my minimum RT commute of 40 miles (city/hwy mix) or 60 mile (hwy) are well within the Leaf's range no matter what time of year or road conditions I may encounter... (Please stop me now if my assumptions are wrong :? )

I'm certain it will not take me very long to reach a comfort level with this vehicle.

I look forward to sharing my adventures in the future!

If you stay off the hwy, can you routinely reach 100 miles?

Did everyone just gasp?, in many cities you dont have to use the hwy if you dont want to.

has to be at least 100? because my best was 98 miles and only about 8 miles into first low batt warning. based on a 21 Kw allotment, could have done 122 miles

also did 104 miles which was about 4 miles after 2nd batt warning. based on above, should have been able to do 112 miles.

but alas, that was the heat of September (our hottest month this year...dont know what happened to August)

both days were done with temps in the low 80's

Does it still count if I start over 6000' elevation and end up at sea level?

Well, sure. That's 100 miles (if you've done it). We'll have a maximum range contest later (I'm taking my car to the top of the Sierra Nevada... see ya at the beach!)

Four miles into VLB... there wasn't 10 more miles in that battery!!

But, you're in the club!!! BTW, how was 98 "your best" but you also did 104 ?

Sounds like a safe bet, but I'm sure there are ways to fail. Driving that 60 miles of highway at 94mph.... not going to make it !! Driving that 40 miles in heavy stop and go, with the heater blasting on max on a really cold day... probably not going to make it.

OK so the OP needs to list all club members in the original post.
I am not yet a member. So far I end up charging at some point if the day will be 100+ miles.
I will need to make a dedicated effort as the random chance of an exact 100/105 mile day in favorable conditions will be rare.

I didn't qualify how the 100 miles was done... just that it's possible. I predict that "routine" and "100 miles" will not be used much, regardless of what road, path or highway might be driven on.

So far, three people, for a total of 4 trips.

purely from a miles/kw standpoint. my 98 miles trip was done at 6.2 miles/kw the 104 mile trip done at 5.6 although i have 21 Kw to use, i prefer not to get to power limiting mode so i consider 20 Kw to be usable.

i have had several days at 6.0 or higher but i rarely charge to 100% and rarely have that far to go. on my 98 mile day, i ended up putting an extra 9 miles on the meter for basically nothing but only because my stats were good.

i should have kept going but it was then 5 PM traffic and i simply got tired of driving. the 104 mile day was during a Saturday and stopped driving at 8 pm (after run to Dairy Queen!)

Ok, that makes sense. My best "long haul" was the 5.9m/kWh I did up to Long Beach. I think it would have been over 100 miles, except I charged for 15-20 seconds at Kohl's in Costa Mesa, making it not "unrefueled".

My actual 100 miles run was only 5.1-5.3 (I don't remember actually where I ended... it's on video, though).
