Although this may have been mentioned in another post a week or so ago (however I didn't see one), it seemed to me to deserve its own thread: http://evworld.com/news.cfm?newsid=32123" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and http://www.autoblog.com/2014/01/14/tesla-model-s-wall-charger-recall/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

From first article: "The decision to provide the improved part follows a series of about a half-dozen incidents, described on a Tesla-owner website and in some cases relayed to U.S. regulators, in which Model S wall plugs melted or smoked while vehicles were recharging. The redesigned [NEMA 14-50] adapter will include a thermal fuse designed to shut off charging if overheating is detected...".

Starting with the 2013 Leaf, the included portable EVSE has circuitry in the NEMA 5-15 plug to monitor for overheating and terminate a charging session if the temperature exceeds a certain threshold and signal that condition with a certain pattern of flashing lights on the control box.

It seems to me that ALL plugin EVSEs should monitor its plug for overheating. I'm not sure what design is best, but perhaps the Nissan portable with its ability to signal to the user that it is a probable overheating situation is better than the Tesla UMC EVSE approach which appears not to.
