So my dealer has told me that they are getting their demo Leaf next week, as I suspect many other dealers are. Interesting timing given that the next wave if customer deliveries appear to begin the week after that. Especially interesting given how little money is left in the CA fund. All this after Nissan CS had promised on multiple calls that the dealer demos would be used to fill the skipped over 2010 orders. I think Nissan just screwed us again.

Especially if the Dealers have access to the $5000 CA rebate for their demos.

Dealer demos are not titled vehicles, as far as I know. They are in some sort of limbo state with the DMV.

My dealer just confirmed that they are required to keep the demos for 6 months and the car will only be eligible for the CA rebate when it is sold in 6 months. I feel a bit better, but still sucks that Nissan feels it is fine to send dealer demos before the fixing its misallocation problem. Just incredible.

My father-in-law dropped by our dealer today (Mossy Oceanside), and they had just got a silver Leaf demo. Our contact there was surprised--she didn't know it was coming. But there it is, and he said the window sticker said DEMO, too.

When my dealer called me last week to tell me my car arrived, he mentioned in conversation that "we won't be getting any demos as they are now going to customers." Now it looks like at least some dealers are getting them. I wonder if the higher volume dealers are getting them first. My dealer is low volume.

+1! And just more lies!

Not this past week, but mine is supposed to be in the Phoenix area in a few days. Mine will soon be known as the 'Miracle' delivery.

My wife and I were just talking about that last night. Two weeks into ownership and most of the anguish is gone. You're really going to love the car!!

My dashboard changed a while back from week of June 6 to week of June 3, and I got an email informing me of that change. But no word from my dealer, other than a salesman at the dealership who phones me every week or two to ask me if I've heard anything. The head guy there told me they usually get an invoice a couple of days before the car comes, and he'd let me know when it comes, but I've heard nothing from him.

CS told me about 3 weeks ago that my car was cleared for release from port, and that it would definitely be shipped the following week. But the Monday after the promised ship week, I phoned and was told it had not been shipped yet. I've not called again. I have zero expectations of actually getting the car this week, but next Monday, after the promised "week of June 3" has passed, I'll phone them so they can tell me they've reassigned my car again, or lost the order again, and promise to "do their best" to send me a car "real soon now."

My best guess is they'll send me a car long about September. Assuming the Japanese government doesn't offer another rebate and Nissan diverts all production to Japan again.

And I'm not sure I care. The Leaf is not at all the car I really want. The car I want would be an EV about the size of a 1960's-era Civic, with manual crank windows, no GPS, no Bluetooth, no camera, no Homelink mirror, no frills at all, just a good solid 100-mile range and zero to 60 in the 9 to 10 second range and a top speed of 90 mph, just so that the acceleration from 60 to 70 would be acceptable. They could probably take $5,000 off the price of the car if they left off all the useless frills. Sure, I know people like luxury. But I've been pretty happy with my little no-frills Zap Xebra except that it won't go on the freeway and won't go beyond 40 miles.

I emailed Nissan and asked for a VIN. I finally got a number assigned to me. My delivery still says month of July, but I now have a number to my name.

As long as no one has ever had a VIN then lost it, I am content that I am attached to a car and I won't be skipped again ;)

Below is the email I sent to Brian Carolin at Nissan on 5/30/11:

Brian,

My name is Brad Nunn. I am writing you today because I believe that in your position as Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing at Nissan North America you should be able to address what I see as a significant issue in the sales and marketing of the LEAF. I have long been an early adopter of innovations in automotive efficiency and have had a longstanding desire to own a practical EV. My quest for fuel efficiency dates back to the early 80's when I owned a Diesel Rabbit. In the 90's I longed for an EV1 but they were not available in TN. I only recently sold my 2001 Honda Insight in anticipation of obtaining a Leaf and I still have a 2004 Prius. Although I have never owned a Nissan product, I was very excited to hear about Nissan's development of the Leaf. I closely followed news about the Leaf and could not wait until I had the opportunity to reserve one. I eagerly awaited the day that Nissan began taking reservations and was careful to get my reservation in on that first day (4/20/2010). Six days later I received an email confirmation # xxxxxxxxx. On 7/27/10 I received an email stating I would be able to order in Sept. 2010. I was not given the opportunity to order in Sept and after several inquiries to customer service, I did eventually receive an email that I could request a quote. Because I was interested in receiving the vehicle as soon as possible, I had begun negotiations with 10 different Nashville area dealers while I waited for permission to request a quote. I came to an agreement with my preferred dealer, Newton Nissan in Gallatin, TN, before I received the email allowing me to request a quote on 10/22/2010. I requested the quote from Newton the next day and they confirmed our pre-negotiated deal. Since then, I have been waiting (mostly patiently) to receive my LEAF. While I completely understand the delays related to the earthquake in Japan, I have a harder time understanding why orders are not being filled on anything like a first-come, first-served basis.

I have a neighbor who placed his order in Feb. 2011 and he has now had his LEAF for several weeks. I have seen that my preferred dealer has delivered several Leafs to customers ordering well after me, including at least one the same color as mine (blue) and I have recently begun seeing several Leafs around town. If I had been the only one effected by this problem, it would still be a problem for me but, probably not so much for you. However, because I continue to closely following developments related to the Leaf online, I am aware that there are (according to the mynissanleaf.com forum) a whole group of Sept. and Oct. orders that have not been filled while orders placed months later are filled. I would think that Nissan would be more interested in trying to please the folks that were so interested from the outset. It is as if Apple allowed folks to stroll in off the street and purchase the latest iPhone ahead of the folks who camped out for days in order to get the first ones. I have shared my interest in the Leaf with friends and family and am frequently asked about the status of my order. But, instead of demonstrating all of the fine features and performance of the Leaf to all our friends and families, I and other early adopters (or at least wannabe early adopters) are left grumbling to friends and online forums about how Nissan screwed up the order process. While I am not a marketing professional, turning the early adopters who could be your biggest word of mouth promoters into critics can't be good for business. My dashboard continues to indicate that my Leaf is due in July 2011, but despite calls to customer service and emails to my preferred dealer, I have no real explanation as to why it seems that others who ordered long after I did are receiving their orders while I hear nothing. I would appreciate anything you could do to rectify this error for me and the others that have been affected. I look forward to hearing from you.

I provided my name and phone #. I will let the group know what, if any, response I receive.
Brad

The word you want is "affected," not "effected."

Correct: I have been affected by your negligence.
Incorrect: I have been effected by your negligence.

Correct: The effect of the tax rebate is to enable people with less money to buy the car.
Correct: The tax reduction has effected [that is, "caused"] an increase in demand for the car.

Archaic: I thought the King had more affected the Duke of Albany than Cornwall.
Modern translation: I thought the King felt more affection for the Duke of Albany than for the Duke of Cornwall.

I was assigned the VIN ending in 1201. It was on my owner's portal and I was able to register it for carwings. I was told by my dealer that VIN 1201 was in Portland on its way here and would arrive on or about April 22. When it failed to arrive, I phoned in mid-May and was told 1201 was no longer assigned to me and I was given a new VIN and a "month of July, 2011" arrival and I had to register for Carwings all over again. Eventually "month of July" became week of June 6 and then week of June 3, which is this week, but my dealer has heard nothing.

However, if you placed your order in 2011 you probably have nothing to worry about. Those orders are being fulfilled before the remaining 2010 orders.

Edit: I see that you ordered in October. Good luck. You'll need it!

I hope your June 3 proves correct. My original date was April 15 so originally you were a week behind me. Looks like the delivery is only two or three weeks behind me so not that much worse than the rest of us April stuck orders.
