As a reservation holder and shareholder, I attended the Newport Beach Fashion Island cocktail party, grand opening of the Tesla store in the mall, and S sedan viewing.

The car is awesome looking. Very mainstream looking and received a lot of positive comments from current LEAF and other EV owners that attended. It will be on view for the rest of the weekend for those wanting to take a look at it.

It was also funny how many shareholders say they will use the profit on the stock to buy the car! In the meantime, I am enjoying my 2 LEAFs, but very tempted by a 7 passenger configuration and multiple storage areas in the S sedan.

I really do believe that 2013 will be when the masses see the car.

Very Cool! I was wondering when it was going to open since Apple vacated the location. I will have to stop by with the family to check it out. Is the S "display only" or can people sit in it???

The one I saw, back in March, at the Newport Tesla Dealer was a LOOK only version of the Model S. Tesla said it was a prototype based on the non-Tesla underbelly, so the interior room was not a representation of the production car. What Tesla really wanted, that day, was your credit card for a $5K deposit. Or better yet the $50K deposit to get a signature edition (move to the front of the line deposit) of the Model S.

Good advice! Note to self; When visiting Tesla store... leave CC at home.

I think the ones touring the showrooms are the Beta models that were driven or on display at the factory a month ago. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm planning to go to Fashion Island this evening or tomorrow to see the S for the first time. I expect to be impressed. I've loved the design as soon as I saw the first photos. The car is probably bigger than anything I'd want, but I'll be following Tesla's progress closely.

(Off topic, but I happened to see my first Fisker Karma on the road in Laguna Woods this evening, a gorgeous bright silver one. It looked really great on the road. I pulled a U-turn when I could, but he was long gone. I'm going to have to scout out Fisker's facilities nearby soon.)

I dropped by around 9 pm this evening. It was quite the event. The store was swarming with excited, very impressed, and stylish Newport Beach folks. They have a large, attractive staff dressed in Tesla running suits. They had barristas making lattes, but they shut down before I got one. They were giving out Hot Wheels (TM) of the Roadster. I grabbed one as swag for Gary and one for myself. As TRONZ said, the store replaced the old Apple store and it is located near Macy's, facing the inner court near the koi ponds and the Atrium.

They had the white colored Beta model from the drive event up in Fremont on the showroom floor. They said that the red one is in Chicago right now. They are allowing, in fact they are encouraging sitting in the car. They have a Tesla specialist sitting in the front passenger seat, explaining the interior features for a five minute spiel. Apparently, you can sit in the rear and then switch to the driver's seat after the spiel. They also have the "skateboard" on display, the aluminum frame that carries the battery box and the front and rear running gear, as well as the motor.

The car is beautiful and very impressive and I can see why everyone who has seen the prototypes is excited. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement and get a case of "the wants". Personally, the car is a bit large for my tastes. I'd rather have a capable small sports EV as well as a family EV or PHEV of a smaller size than the S, but that is personal taste. I also have concerns about Tesla's reliance on touch screens for all driver interactions. They are proud to tell you that there are only three buttons in the interior, the glove box button, the 4-way flashers and one other, maybe the Start button, I can't recall. There were a couple of roller controls on the steering wheel with just +/- markings. They did say that there would be voice commands as well. For me, the array of buttons and touch screen features like the LEAF has is preferable because you can learn to use many of the buttons and rocker switches by touch without taking your eyes off the road. To use touch screen icons, you must look away from the road and watch the display to make sure that you hit the right space on the screen. I really think that Tesla is either going to have to add some buttons or they will have serious customer and press reviewer concerns about the user interface.

The large 17 inch central touch screen with WiFi and 3G is impressive, but I think that it's overkill. They said that their Nav feature will be Google Maps with a scrolling satellite view, but that a more familiar GPS with voice guidance would be an option. I think that should be standard. Again, looking at the big screen will be a distraction, and if you're navigating that way without voice guidance, more dangerous.

I asked if the base ($57,500) 160 mile model would have leather at least and I was told that it would probably be an option and they would have some kind of faux leather or other material as standard.

Watching the progress of the build and delivery roll out, press reactions and build quality of the production model will be fascinating over the next year.

have to agree with EVNow; i know a handful of people where money is literally no object that will not buy leather, no matter what. fake leather, sure, but the real stuff?? no way.

one family i know pays probably 300-400% more for food because they will only buy locally and organic. i buy grass fed beef from a farm in Tenino (about 20 miles from Oly) steaks run about $11 a pound. ground beef around $6. if purchased by the box.

get a half and its cheaper, but the logistics of storing it (we bought a small chest freezer for this very purpose) and paying $800 a pop is not something taken lightly but it has worked out. (keeping in mind that Beef cattle raising ranks as one of the top GHG producers in the world) i love the steaks, but hate the impact on our environment but this farm is self sustaining and virtually non polluting. check it out if you live here. they only deliver locally. they do goto farmer's markets in the area or you can drive there. http://www.colvinranch.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

another place; Burgerville. has a very limited menu and cost at least twice as much as any other fast food restaurant but is still very popular. although its a chain fast food restaurant, its similarities with other chain restaurants stop right there.

100% of their menu is provided locally. if you want to know what is being harvested locally at any time of the year. go there. their shakes, drinks, etc are always based on what is picked fresh that week.

but then again. i could go on and on. this is very much the culture here. now sure, we have gas guzzling, steak eating, people who burn uncertified wood stoves all winter long with the fricking front door open. ya, we got them. but for the most part, this area is very environmentally conscious and leather is out

Isn't the Model X supposed to surface before the end of the year??? Thats like within 40 days. Or is that just a "rumor" before Detroit?

I wonder if it can tow???

I saw the skateboard the otherday. I missed the beat (I had seen the alpha earlier).

Even the skateboard looks HUGE. I wish Musk had fewer kids - may be they would have developed a shorter car ;)

Sorry to hear that you "missed a beat", evnow. I think you actually missed the Beta, though. :D

How did you get to see the skateboard and not the actual car? Do they have the skateboards at many of the Tesla showrooms?

I like your comment about Elon's family size. I think he said in "Revenge" that he wants 8 or 10 kids. No wonder he's building a 7 seater.

Yes - the beta. I don't miss beats, though !

Don't know - but they do have it in the Bellevue, WA showroom.

Stopped by Tesla Fashion Island today. Very cool! I will go through pics and see if they are thread worthy.

P.S. $5K deposits are not enough to get a "Signature" edition Model S, if you go to their website, you will see to get one of the first 1,000 Signature edition Model S's with the 300 mile pack, you need to put down $40K. $5K deposit holders will likely be waiting until nearly 2013 for their cars.

Sounds like the same scam the last electric car company did with it's customers. Remember Phoenix. They were asking for something like 25% down to guarantee getting one of the first year's cars. Then they declared bankruptcy and never delivered any cars or returned any deposits.

Stop spreading FUD.

All of Tesla's deposits are held in a separate escrow account. There is no issue of getting your money back no matter what happens should you choose.

This reservation scheme is essentially the same as the one Tesla ran for the Roadster which worked out well.

Tesla coming out in 2013? So is my future car: 2114 Infinity electric sedan for about 40 grand...
Lick your chops, BEV lovers. It should have larger battery and it is based on Leaf tech.

You do know this image is a photochop from an Infiniti Essence image right? Unfortunately people in the know have explained the Infiniti EV will be bland in comparison.
