I just leased a new 2015 leaf model s with QC. I just installed a 220v outlet with NEMA 14-50 plug.
I am considering purchasing the following: Leviton A2034-PEV 30-Amp Level 1 Electric Vehicle Charge Connector with 20-Feet Cord
It is available at Amaxon for $ 166. The title says L1 but the description says L2.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FH7EVN8/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item#productDetails" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I also purchased a CAMCO 50 Amp plug to go with it. See below:
http://www.amazon.com/Camco-55255-PowerGrip-Replacement-Plug/dp/B000PGVZ30/ref=pd_sim_hi_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0AKCF9Y5X0AWYNF6SWJH" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It appears to me that I can get Level 2 charging for under $ 200 and without a charging station. Is it too good to be true? If so, where's the catch? Please help me, as I can still cancel my order.
thanks
K

That item on Amazon is not an EVSE, it is a 30A replacement cable for an EVSE. The item will not give you what you need to connect your car to you power outlet.

You could get that cord, a range cord and add both of them to one of these kits

http://store.openevse.com/collections/evse-kits/products/openevse-30a-basic-charge-station-combo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://emotorwerks.com/products/online-store/product/show/44-customizable-juicebox-a-high-power-level-2-ev-charging-station-60a-15kw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Then you would have the ability to charge your car from your outlet

Wow. Seems like an expensive way to L2 charge at home. Are there any inexpensive options available, other than evseupgrade.com ?

The least expensive L2 charger I have seen for outright purchase (not evseupgrade.com) is the ClipperCreek LCS-20 for $395, which provides 15 Amps of charging power. http://www.clippercreek.com/store/product/charging-station-lcs-20-level-2/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. They also have the LCS-25, which provides 20 Amps of power for $100 more at http://www.clippercreek.com/store/product/charging-station-lcs-25-level-2/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. There are a handful of L2 stations in the $400 range, but I think that's the current lowest price for a ready-built L2 EVSE.

Another dumb/newbie question: What would happen if i were to use the above 2 items (Leviton cable and CAMCO plug) and charge my 2015 Nissan Leaf? In other words, why do I need a EVSE if I can charge the leaf directly through the 220v outlet?

Basically there is a charger built in to the car that can except either 120vac or 240vac. The evse is an external "brain" that connects to the car via the J1772 plug you see. So in that connection there is the main heavy duty power lead and then smaller signal leads that talks between the car and the external EVSE. They talk about things like what voltage the external power source is and how much power the external power supply can give to the car and checks for thing like ground faults and make sure everything is safe to supply power. Once they are done talking the car tells the evse to turn on it's power and then the car starts charging.

Basically an EVSE is a smart external switch that communicates with the car.

Thank you for clarifying it so nicely.
