I was looking on amazon to see what a level 1 charger costs, if mine were to get stolen charging it out the window. you can buy a 15 amp 120v connector for only 100 bucks compared to the nissan one which is only 12 amps for 400. would i be able to use this 15 amp cable on the spark ev or the nissan leaf, and what difference does the extra 3 amps make. here is the link

No. http://www.amazon.com/Leviton-A2055-PEV-120-Volt-Electric-Connector/dp/B00CJWSV0S/?tag=myelecarfor-20&/ref=sr_1_2?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1424245204&sr=1-2&keywords=level+1+charger" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is just a cable w/a J1772 connector, NOT an EVSE.

You are looking for a replacement L1 EVSE. See http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=14728&p=332668#p332668" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; re: EVSEs vs. "chargers".

A genuine new replacement Nissan-branded L1 EVSE is a lot more than $400. The $500 http://www.clippercreek.com/store/product/pcs-15-portable-level-1-evse/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; should be decent to good quality.

u might not be up to date on prices. here is a nissan oem level 1 evse for 400.00 on amazon. im assuming it is the same as you get with the car: http://www.amazon.com/Nissan-Leaf-Charger-Evse-Level/dp/B00PJ1E4RK/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1424246628&sr=8-5&keywords=level+1+charger" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
u can even buy a level 2 evse for 520. i guess prices are collapsing. didnt these things cost 2k a couple years ago.

400 is still too much to risk charging out the window of my apartment. i will have to stick with the free casino charging

That's from a random reseller on Amazon. I doubt it's new and it's possibly stolen or came via illegitimate means. It's also not the one that comes w/2013+ Leafs, which has a smaller and longer brick along w/a different J1772 handle.

In reference to older ones (not 2013+ L1 EVSEs): http://www.courtesyparts.com/296m1-package-evse-leaf-ze0-2011-p-645149.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=140566" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

No. J1772 L2 EVSEs early on were about $1K. Yes, there have been a # of lower cost L2 EVSEs available for awhile now. http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&p=290869" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; sorta started it. Clipper Creek LCS-20 (208/240 volt, hardwired) is $395: http://www.clippercreek.com/store/featured-products/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, for example.

how much does a electrician charge to install a 240 volt plug in your garage.
Depends on where you live and how far it is from the garage location to the main panel or a sub-panel suitable to power the 240V outlet.
Probably in the range of $150 to $3,000 in the USA.

evboy I heard of this trick on this forum somewhere, but you can leave the level 1 evse that came with the car under the hood and sneak the evse end out near the charge port and plug it in to the charge port. Then take any good 12 gauge extension cord and run that from the outlet to under your hood as well. Then someone has to pop your hood to steal your evse. They could cut and steal the regular 120 v extension cord, but that's a lot less expensive.

I found the thread take a look

that wont work. they will just break the window and pop the hood. now i have to pay for a new window also. maybe i can search for a apartment with a garage that wont break the bank, or i can just charge at the casino and walk home.

If you live somewhere where it's likely they will break the window to steal a cable that's pinched in your hood, then you're window is going to get broken and somethine else stolen anyway... ;-)
Serioulsy, you're looking to decrease the "casual theft" by adding some obvious barriers.
There is 0 way to protect anything if someone is willing to go to that level, except for maybe the garage.. (should help at least)
(I know; I grew up in East Los Angeles. Left my door unlocked and someone still broke my window to get my $50 K-Mart car stereo..)

Have good insurance?
(Mine covers theft of an EVSE and has a low enough deductible to let me relax a bit.. That and the fact that I don't live in East L.A. anymore..)

That seller has 5 of them and they are listed as "new", I doubt they are stolen or illegitimate.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aag/details/ref=aag_m_ss?ie=UTF8&asin=&isAmazonFulfilled=&isCBA=&marketplaceID=ATVPDKIKX0DER&seller=A2I29MLQ9CO6YF#aag_legalInfo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; shows they specialize in consumer goods (looks like they sell vacuum cleaners and headphones) and they have hundreds of ratings on amazon.

They aren't a big company but it isn't likely that it is an illegal operation or someone would shut them down.

That is the cable only. You need a power cable, EVSE board, housing, and misc parts. You could build it for under $250 using OpenEVSE or JuiceBox basic parts. It is better to set it to 12A for a standard household 15A circuit. !5A requires a dedicated 20A circuit ( 16A max continuous ).
