Newbie question about the clean air vehicle decal

Hi, Just got my Leaf and am excited about using the car pool lane.

I have the DMV application but it needs a license plate number? since i just got my car and don't have a plate yet, do I have to wait until i have a plate before applying for the decal??

any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

You don't have to have a license plate number but your car does have to be in the DMV system first. Some dealers take up to 30 days to turn in the paperwork to the DMV so you might want to check with your dealer and see when they do so...

Thanks for the info! So if the dealer registered my car w dmv, I can submit the decal form and leave the license plate info blank??

Spoke to the dealer. they submitted the registration to dmv but dmv have not processed it. So... Wait!

The DMV told me two different things (need license plate number, Yes, No),
but I submitted without licence plate (left blank, just provided accurate VIN),
and the DMV office in Sacramento that handles these applications just waited
until it was in the DMV database, and then cashed my check (thed do want the
money), and sent the decals. Worked fine for me, 3 years ago.

It apparently depends on who you get there... When I did mine, they returned the application and the check since it was not yet in their system...
