It was rumored that GM was paying $1000 per kWh for the Volt's batteries a couple of years ago, and that is with major OEM volume.. pretty good that a small company can come so close now.

They could always use cheap Chinese laptop cells at $200/kWh and drop the prices.

Herm; you are correct in that is was a rumor since GM was manufacturing ZERO BEVs and that was their demand as well.
 
I find them intriguing, but I would definitely prefer an installed option where they were automatically used and charged along with the main pack. Otherwise, I fear they would simply sit most of the time, fully charged, but unused.

I doubt it will cost much more for the "installed" version.
