The reduced charge current at higher battery SoC prevents immediate catastrophic damage due to over-charging one cell, but it still heats the battery, and heat is the enemy of battery longevity. The effect is possibly minor in cars with active cooling, but the Leaf doesn't even have that.

I'm not aware of the data on this. There seem to be conflicting anecdotal reports.

But the effect of heat on batteries is definitely bad; I'm sure I could dig up scientific papers if needed. My point was that you can't conclude from the way the current tapers at higher SoC that the effect of fast charging is negligible.
