Nissan is very much right if they make the Es super light. Zack's stock GT5 LEAF with no weight reduction only turned a lap of the Green Hell in 12:54. That's almost a minute and a half slower than the weight reduced LEAF. It also Turtled 90% into the second lap from the increased consumption. So GT5 kills a stock LEAF at The Ring in about 28 miles/24 minutes. Or less than 1.2 miles per kW! This is probably about right IMO. I might do some weight comparison tests to project out how a 2500lb and 2000lb LEAF would perform at race pace with a stock battery.

If GT5 has any bearing on a real world scenario of an E at the 'Ring, then we'd probably need to see the existing pack used in the Leaf (and possibly other EV Nissans to follow in the near future) at least double in capacity considering an EV sports car should be expected to have a motor w/ close to double what the Leaf has. Makes sense why the Tesla Roadster has a 56kWh batt.

Boy, first I've read about the ESFLOW, really hope this one makes it to production, I'd buy it right now. Reminds me a little of my 280z I had back in the day, loved that car.

I still have faith!

If the preproduction concept is shown in a year (aka Detroit 2014) then that would put it on a very nice trajectory as a 2015 model, just like Bancon suggested last year.

For me it looks like it will be a race between the Tesla Gen3 and the ESFlow, if they make the ESFlow a hybrid I'm out and Tesla gets my business.

I'm with you in hoping for a affordable (that's the key word), performance oriented RWD EV, but I think we might be waiting for a while.

Nissan has been talking about a sub-Z entry for years, but in all likelihood it will be a new iteration of the Silvia (USDM: 240SX). The "guilt-free" engine is probably a hint to a small displacement, turbo-ed engine (2.0T and 1.8T have been used for Silvias of the past). W/ the current 24 kWh batt that Nissan uses for the Leaf, it just won't cut it for a performance car. Even the Nismo Leaf RC can't make it around the 13.1 miles of the Nurburgring to post a decent time due to the limitations of the batt, hence Nissan has never attempted it.

Agree! Bancon has said that Nissan wants to do a "Signature" EV around 2015. That should easily mean "Performance" EV! The fact that Nissan is not hyping it very much is promising (for fully electric) considering Ghosn's admitted love for tricking the competition. The fact that sports cars take a VERY long time to develop, the only new sports car Nissan has shown in 5 years is the EsFlow EV and that there are a bunch of Nismo LEAF RS's running around in plain sight with unknown hardware should make any EV fan grin. We could get blind sided with a hybrid but as a designer, I understand Bancon when he clearly stated "a gas powered EsFlow would be a different car". Have not seen any small gas powered z-Car making the auto show rounds lately for 2015. But we will know for sure within a year!

This could be but that would also park it against the Scion/BRZ/MX5. Not a bad place for nissan to go IMHO. But that car took Toyota and Subaru years to develop and refine. 2015 means the concept has already been shown and its pre-production form is due in 9-12 months. Whatever Nissan is going to do has already been shown in some form. The only Nissan Performance RWD mules I see running around are Nismo RS's unless you have seen otherwise.

I love em... but would fall out of my chair if todays Nissan released a Turbo Sports Car.

Edit - Actually, in fairness, the Nissan DeltaWing is a 1.6L Turbo Sports Car which is very interesting.

So the recent description by Nissan about this new model is that it is a "Marmite car". WTF is Marmite??? "People will either love it or hate it! It's that kind of car."

Conspiracy Theory Fun Time!
BUT, why would a Nissan executive use a British food product to describe a Japanese car to people in Detroit? My tin foil hat says because Lotus is developing the car. The Exec was just reciting what he had heard. And we know, among other things, Lotus is the primary developer of Nissan's lightweight "alternative" powered performance vehicles. The LEAF Nismo RS is no stranger to their test facility... and Marmite loving drivers.

"The new model will be based on the previous Esflow concept, presented about two years ago."

"The beauty of pure electric is that there is oodles of torque and power instantaneously!"

And there it is! LET THE COUNTDOWN TO TOKYO BEGIN!!! :D

Fingers crossed that it's a pure EV! And actually available for purchase in the near future.

Started a Production EsFlow thread.
