I am looking at a 2016 Nissan Leaf SV with 63K miles. It shows 8 bars and leafspy shows 63% SOH. When I called the Nissan EV line, they said there are no outstanding recalls or software upgrades on the car. They also verified that the capacity warranty is good till June 2016. The local NIssan dealer refuses to look at it cause the car is not under my name. They are happy to charge me a 1 hour labor to go over the condition of the car but wont do anything with the battery. I am inclined to buying the car but wanted to see if there is any gotchas

First pick up a 'Magic 8 Ball' and do some serious consultation with it. Then read the used Leaf buying guide thread

The capacity warranty on a 2016 depends on the battery size. If it is a 24kWh battery it has a 6 year 60k mile capacity warranty. If it is a 30kWh battery it has a 8 year 100k mile capacity warranty. The June 2016 may be the start of the warranty period (or not...) but it isn't the warranty end date.

THis is my third leaf. The problem is Nissan dealer will not do anything with the battery till I own the car. It is currently showing 8 bars and still under battery capacity warranty. I know the BMS needed to be updated and the capacity might be higher. I am just surprised the EV line cannot tell me if the software patch was applied. The Nissan Dealer that is EV certified says there are no recalls on the car and they will only look at the battery once I own the car. The car was a trade in at a Ford dealer and has spent all its life in New Orleans. I am in Chicago so the battery wont degrade as much.

Have the Ford dealer ask Nissan if the BMS update has been done. I can understand why Nissan would only give that information to the owner and the dealer is the owner.

I did. Long story short that didnt work.

Lots of dates being thrown around...but the one(s) that matter are June 2016 and 5 years/60k miles (not 6 years/60k miles).
From where I sit, you have exceeded the time frame for a free/warranty replacement battery pack by a month (even though you are at 8 bars--regardless of whether it has had a BMS update).
Now that doesn't mean that Nissan wouldn't "meet you half-way" being so close to the warranty expiration date, but that can be solved the same way as the software update question (via the dealer).

I'm not certain, but a warranty recall lookup of the VIN may include the BMS software update information:

Perhaps someone who definitely had the update installed can test that assumption...

That's 5 years and 60k miles for a 24kwh car, whichever comes first. As noted, it's 8 years / 100k miles for the 30kwh pack.

Does anybody know if any warranty replacents have been denied by Nissan claiming abuse or anything like that? (Besides the one month out of warranty type refusals) (I would probably roll the dice and buy it, if it is 30 kW. See the buying guide on how to tell) (What did the 8 ball say?)

I don't know of any denials for this, but the car will record it if it is left in 120F or greater heat, and THAT will void the warranty. That's why we always have to make sure that a body shop won't be baking the whole car after painting part or all of it.

I am probably going to buy the car and then take it to Nissan. My current leaf is a 12 SL with 76.5% SOH. Worst case scenario this will be a 9 bar leaf after software update, if there is any. So the SOH will be about 72.5% worst case scenario making this a 75 mile range car as opposed to 60 that my current car is. Does that sound about right? Best case is they give me a 40kwh battery:) The car is a SV so 4th digit is B and it is a 30kwh battery.

I think it's a good bet. The only way you really lose if it is loses its 4th bar just after the warranty expires. All things considered, that is probably a low probability and it sounds like even then it wouldn't be a total loss since the car will still be usable for you. On the other hand, you have a good chance of getting a new 40kWh battery free. Seems like a decent wager to me.

Betting on qualifying for a free 40 kWh pack would be less of a gamble if you had a definitive answer as to whether or not it's had the BMS software bug fix installed. If it has not had the update, then it could easily recover a battery bar after the update is done.

Apparently you can check the BMS software version via LeafSpy Pro

Thank you. I will check it out when I can get to the dealership in 2 weeks. Hopefully the car is still there.

Anyone near San Diego wanting to get in the battery lottery? I'm tempted to go look at this 2016 with 60k miles for $9k, but something seems off to me. Looks like it was sold in Fremont a couple of months ago, and the dealer has carfax available for every car, except this one. Here is the VIN on the listing 1N4BZ0CP9GC303767

(I love how the craigslist ad mentions the economical 4 cylinder engine
