Actually, CR has some fairly sophisticated algorithms in place to ferret out such problems... FYI, I haven't received a paper survey in years; I get and do them electronically.

CR just mails out a paper survey to all their subscribers and then tallys the returned surveys. If a few mad MY12 owners return bad surveys and no MY11 owners do the same you get skewed data.

Unfortunately the most obvious one isn't used by CR, they have a bad habit of publishing ratings when they don't have enough data.

deficiencies in their methods are documented all over the internet, forgive me for not keeping current on all of the exact issues.

a few google results that might shed insight

anyway I was probably just thinking about the old days when I mentioned a paper survey, I have a hard time thinking of CR as technically adept since I've made my living in the IT field for decades and their tech reviews have always been entry level to the point of being useless.

I'm also surprised no one called me out on linking to the Mini Cooper since there are much less reliable cars I could have linked to :) I just picked one quickly that I though might make a reasonable comparison. I didn't know the Dodge/Chrysler cars well enough to pick a 2011/2012 and I didn't see any reason to embarrass ford by linking to the F-150 repair history just because I didn't know a better car to compare to the Leaf.
