The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has begun road tests to gauge the performance and economy of electric cars, with the help of taxi drivers.
An electric vehicle taxi stand was set up in front of Tokyo Station 2 weeks ago.
18 electric vehicles from 13 taxi companies use the stand.
The Metropolitan Government has asked the companies for the daily logs of their electric vehicles. The logs contain such information as travel routes and distances, and the time taken to reach each destination.
The city will analyze the logs to learn more about the taxis' performance, including how the use of air conditioners and headlights affect their range. The tests will run through February.
A Tokyo official says data collected from the taxi drivers will serve as an evaluation base for electric vehicles. The official says the government will use the test results to encourage the use of electric vehicles.
