I went to the Redhawk Casino in Placerville, Ca which is an 80 mile round trip with 1500 feet of elevation going and a lot of coasting down hill on the way home. I started out with a full charge showing 256 GIDS on the meter and 12 bars. The Redhawk has a level 1 receptacle in their valet area and they'll let you use their 50 foot extension cord if needed.
I opted to recharge at the Nissan dealer in Shingle Springs which is about 3 miles ( 2 exits before the Redhawk exit) . I pulled in with 4 bars, 3.7 M/KWH on the trip computer, 37 miles on the odometer and 120 GIDs (9.6 KWH) on the meter. I charged for 45 minutes and added 30 GIDS bringing me up to 150 GIDS and pulled into the casino with 142 GIDS and 11.4 KWH on the meter, which is easily enough to make the down hill trip home. I've done a few times before. I drove both ways in daylight without using the air conditioning. The ambient temp was in the 70's.
I noticed that as I started the return trip home the M/KWH wasn't giving me the usual higher M/KWH that I expected to see. I do quite a bit of putting the Leaf in reverse and coasting but this time the numbers didn't feel right. When I was about 20 miles out I got a message that I might not have enough power to complete the trip. The M/KWH was at 4.0. It should have been in the low 5. range. My average speed was about 60 MPH, higher when coasting on the down grades.
I pulled off the freeway and limped home with messages telling me to find a safe place to pull over. I made it to my home with 6 miles flashing on the dash. The LBW always comes on when I hit 49 GIDS and the meter read 47. The dash was flashing 5 miles remaining.
I plugged in my EVSE upgrade but opted not to activate it for a few hours while waiting for the electric rates to drop. I turned the Leaf on to note the trip readings and was shocked to find the dashboard display read 16 miles and no LBW. The GID meter changed from 47 GIDs to 77 GIDS. Using the miles driven from the odometer (40) and the GIDS used from the meter my actual M/KWH for the return trip was 5.2 as expected.
I fired up the level 2 charger and the Leaf accepted the charge and the meter readout increased as expected from the new 77 GID reading.
I don't think the Leaf would do a balancing from me plugging it in and not powering it on. I had done a cell balancing about a week ago.
Any ideas?
