Nothing prevented GM for putting its 'Voltec' plug-in hybrid technology into a CUV or truck ... or whatever form factor consumers want. That GM did not do so successfully says that 'Voltec' failed to be profitable to GM in the marketplace.
Sorry apologists, but it really is that simple.
Why now ? Partial loss of the federal tax credit.
Sure, much lower gas prices have been a big part of that. Still, a small CUV offered with AWD would have sold considerably better. It seems now that the green outdoorsy people who would have been the natural market for that will likely just wait for a BEV version to be affordable, barring some Outlander/Crosstrek etc. PHEVs.
