EVgo to go public via $2.6 billion SPAC deal

I don't check-in here often, and I missed this news. That wasn't too bad for me, because NYSE:CLII price isn't climbing yet, so I didn't miss out.

Yep, right here, I'm raising my hand! I bought a hundred of 'Climate Change Crisis Real Impact I Acquisition Corporation' @ $19,19.

x2 on the CLII and also tossed some at the CCIV in case Lucid goes public.

I have buyer's remorse, I regret buying EVgo (NYSE:CLII). Because now: 'EVgo prohibits the use of all home-built electric vehicles, home-built onboard chargers, and vehicles that contain personally modified chargers (“Unauthorized Vehicles and Chargers”).'. (EVgo Terms Of Service as of 2021 March)

I admire those capable, determined, pioneers who make their own non-polluting vehicles. They are heroes. I am upset, my feelings are hurt, because EVgo has banned the most passionate of their potential customer audience. I opine, EVgo is being unfair. I no longer like em.

As if to retaliate/spite EVgo, I bought ChargePoint (NYSE:CHPT). Both of these picks might be total wastes of money, so I'm not going to add to them. Lucid (CCIV), I was lucky to have heard about it early enough, I bought a hundred shares @ $18; I hope you're not down in it. My favourite long-term stock, what I hope and wish and believe in, is Nouveau Monde Graphite, OTC:NMGRF.

Heard about the DIY restriction but have not delved into it yet (got about 100 things already on the agenda) but how with EVgo determine a DIY vehicle is plugging in?

So what about a 2011-2017 Leaf with a new 40 kWh or 62 kWh battery installed by a third party? EVgo won’t let you charge? Would they even know you don’t have the original battery in your car anymore?

That isn't even a remote definition of a DIY vehicle.

I am guessing that this restriction won't be actively enforced. However, if a DIY EV plugs in and results in damage to the EVgo charger and/or the car, then EVgo can point to this and counter-sue the offender for damages. In other words, I see this as a legal protection and not much more.

I think Brian's got it right. If your home built car causes damages they will go after the person whose account charged (via RFID card ID or account from app). Just more of a legal CYA thing. I doubt the charger will refuse to charge the car. For l2 (which EVGO does also have) they won't even be able to tell what kind of car it is. I don't see any reason to be angry at EVGo for this, charge stations are not cheap and if you blow one up with a home made car I guess they could bother you. I have never heard of a home made car ever damaging a charger but maybe it happened somewhere, I would think charge components would be fairly standard.

Also what is home made? Made at my home? Is EV West (famous conversion company) considered not home made then? I guess if you buy a kit from EV West and do it yourself that then is home made?

I have a J-1772 port to 3 prong 120 volt socket adapter that lets any onboard plug in charger that will accept 240 volts (many of the ones that use 120 volts here will do that, to conform to Euro standards) charge from an L-2 station. For safety those need to be labeled "240 Volts" but I've used it a couple of times with my big scooter. This would allow lots of home-built small EVs to use L-2 stations. I haven't seen any Chademo or SAE Combo adapters in that category, though, for obvious reasons.

From Plugshare's activity feed, someone submitted a bunch of new pics of various Bay Area stations with the CHAdeMO adapter attached to the side, thus adding Tesla connectors. It's possible they were added by EVgo.

Examples:
https://www.plugshare.com/location/95993
https://www.plugshare.com/location/109423 - I've used these in the past 6 months or so when they were part of DrivetheARC. They definitely didn't have the CHAdeMO adapters bolted to side back then.

https://www.evgo.com/tesla-san-francisco includes numerous locations outside the city of SF now. And, there's https://www.evgo.com/tesla-los-angeles.

Smart money. Then we have EA. I had a pretty "active" discussion with someone who was convinced that EA is being built using the magnanimity of VW claiming VW "decided" to expand the EA network as part of the Dieselgate settlement. I almost had a hernia from laughing so hard.

Despite my telling him that EA was spending OUR MONEY to benefit VW, he was unwavering in his defense as EA customer #1

When EA realizes they have to run an actual business model, they will follow suit with EVGo. Too many Teslas out there to ignore. Even though chademo adapters are few, I see them used frequently at DC stations. Especially where EA, EVgo, or Greenlots owns the highway rest station location. Convienence of location will trump a small cost difference in most cases.

ummm, yeah... I think what you meant to say was "when OUR money runs out and EA has to start spending THEIR money, they will see things a bit differently"

Yes, that was my point. Pretty sure the existing model loses money, and not small amounts.

Phillips 66 recently celebrated out amd said they can not yet justify rolling out DC stations at their gas stations because charging frequency wouldn't be high enough.

Well, as far as money goes... EVgo continues to extend their COVID relief pricing monthly now it seems. Mine ends 3/31. Was supposed to end 12/31/20 so guessing its month to month now.

I should grab a charge then post it online to piss off all the EA customers while they are getting reamed. :D

Looks like EVgo has upped their session time limits.

https://web.archive.org/web/20201127002319/https://www.evgo.com/charging-plans/ was an example of prior. https://www.evgo.com/pricing/ is current. For CA Bay Area, it's just 60 minutes regardless of time and plan.

Weird. In the northeast, EVgo still has their obscenely expensive rates. They charge by minute, but even charging at their max rate you are paying 50-60 cents/kWh. And sessions are limited to 45 minutes except during the night.

What states? I checked https://www.evgo.com/pricing/ for a few states in the NE and found they had 60 minute session limits.

Some of the Bay Area EVgo DC FCs have been upgraded (despite their labels) and I've hit IIRC, 47 to 49 kW on them on my Bolt but I don't recall anything over 50 kW.

I recall seeing a Model 3 pull and up use CHAdeMO. I saw him at 49 kW when I left.

And yes, I've used at least one that wasn't upgraded (https://www.plugshare.com/location/99329) given the charging rate I was hitting despite (IIRC) my Bolt being below 50% SoC and the ambient temps.

These "100 kW" units should revert completely to EVgo control now that DrivetheARC is dead:
