Updated 5/17/2011: corrected Premier Nissan listings

List of Nissan dealers who allow public charging, and of those who don't, gathered from forum postings. If your dealer isn't listed, ask them, and report the answer here. Also report if your dealer is listed incorrectly here (policies can change), or if you are a dealer and your listing is incorrect.
A suggested protocol when charging your LEAF at a Nissan dealership: (thanks LEAFguy!)
  • Call ahead, ask for the sales manager and ask if you can charge your LEAF at their store (Most Nissan phone numbers and locations are in your Navigation system)
  • Let the Sales Manager know that you have arrived and will be plugging in your car
  • Offer to leave your key so they can move your car if charging is complete before your return (if you plan on leaving the premises), or if they need that space for a paying customer
  • Thank them for providing such hospitality
Please remember that car dealerships exist to make money, not provide free parking and free electricity. These parking spaces are often in premium customer locations on the dealers premises. If they see that we are willing to work with them, they are more likely to continue to offer this service.

Be sure to call ahead though....they are courtesy charging Volt's from the Chevy dealership next door (same ownership), so they can be crowded at times. The funny thing about that is the Chevy dealership manager balked about putting L2s in, saying he wouldn't need to charge them on anything other than L1.

Paul [Smith] at Nissan did in fact directly contact the general manager there to get Jack to explain Stevens Creek's policy and to impress upon him Nissan's desire that the dealership chargers be as available to all Leafs when possible. According to Paul, Jack said that the policy at Stevens Creek is that chargers WILL be available to ALL Leafs, within reason. (e.g. they wouldn't want a customer, Stevens Creek or otherwise, to simply camp out on one of their chargers hours all day every day, simply because they worked nearby. Also, in the event of a "queue", they would want to give priority to their own customers. All of which seems fair). Jack apologized if that policy was misrepresented or not known by Kahssay, and that he would make an announcement to all his staff to make certain that everyone at Stevens Creek is aware of and adheres to that policy.

It appears that Nissan America has a policy of "encouraging" dealers to permit non-customers to charge, and that this has led to at least one dealer changing their policy to permit public charging. (A big thank-you to "earther" of MNL and to Paul Smith of Nissan America!) So that dealer with the newly enlightened policy is listed with the "good guys."

Also report if your dealer is listed incorrectly here (policies can change), or if you are a dealer and your listing is incorrect.

Awesome job Walterbays in collating all this info -- a very useful resource (perhaps something to be "stickied" by a mod?)
Eventually it would be nice if this level of detail were somehow reflected in the onboard nav of the Leaf, but until that time (and I'm not holding my breath), it just goes to show how useful and powerful a community MNL is!

Nissan of Elk Grove has a Quad-Head available 24/7 and available publicly; a priority policy may take effect if the location becomes "crowded". Any "abuse" (taking advantage of free electrons on a frequent basis simply for the sake of convenience) may be "curtailed". The policy is undergoing continuous discussion as "popularity" increases. A meeting with the local utility provider regarding costs/discounts is planned.

An employee (sales dept) charges there regularly during his work hours. A second spot was a NoEG customer charging yesterday while I visited and talked about the policy. The other two spots were ICE'd, but parking along side (outside aisle) I was able make the cable reach and plug in. They will willingly move an ICE vehicle for Customers if requested.

My personal opinion: this dealership "gets it" and is promoting the adoption of EVs.

Just FYI - I was at Don Davis Nissan in Arlington, TX a few days ago and double-checked with them (James Whitehouse) on their charging policy. He said they would allow any leaf to charge there. He did mention that they had to take their outside charging stations down because they did not meet code. But they will be back up in a few days. In the meantime, if somebody had an emergency they could charge in the service building.

Is there some reason that Santa Monica Nissan is still on the "No" list, when they are clearly on the "Yes" list? They're trying hard to be a good guy and there was never any reason to suggest that they didn't allow public Leaf charging.

Santa Barbara Nissan is happy to allow you to use the L2 Charge Dock if they are not in use. Just call ahead.

McGavock Nissan in Amarillo already has 2 public charging stations up & running at their new location. They aren't even moved in yet, but the AV chargers are there. I tried them and they work fine.

I ran into the owner when I was getting the A/C software upgrade, and he told me they would be publicly available 24/7.

Wow - I'm so impressed that Amarillo has charging stations! I'm in Houston & still awaiting my Leaf. Baker Nissan here has one public charging station. So far I haven't seen anyone using it. Maybe because there are only about 30 Leafs in the city...spread out over 100 sq miles. Still outraged that any Nissan dealer would refuse a charge. Scuzzy!

My mistake, now corrected, with apologies to Santa Monica Nissan. There was one old report of someone who tried to charge at night and was unplugged, possibly by a security guard. But it was never clear whether or not they intended to provide charging off hours, nor what their policy was during business hours. Recent reports including one by the dealer himself unequivocally state they do allow public charging.

I would love for this list to quickly become superfluous, because everyone could know that the only guarantee you need of public charging is the name "Nissan" on the sign. But I'm not sure we're quite there yet.

A suggested protocol when charging your LEAF at a Nissan dealership:
  • Call ahead, ask for the sales manager and ask if you can charge your LEAF at their store (Most Nissan phone numbers and locations are in your Navigation system)
  • Let the Sales Manager know that you have arrived and will be plugging in your car
  • Offer to leave your key so they can move your car if charging is complete before your return (if you plan on leaving the premises), or if they need that space for a paying customer
  • Leave your cell phone number so they can reach you if needed
  • Thank them for providing such hospitality
Please remember that car dealerships exist to make money, not provide free parking and free electricity. These parking spaces are often in premium customer locations on the dealers premises. If they see that we are willing to work with them, they are more likely to continue to offer this service.

(Walter, feel free to add this to the original post if you wish.)

I got my Leaf at Mossy Nissan of El Cajon May 11, and here's info about their current 3 L2's (Karl said they will be installing 2 DC quick chargers in the future):

Karl Kirker is their EV Specialist, and said EVSE's are open to all. Primary L2 EVSE is on the right corner of the building as you enter, business hours only. Contact receptionist. Two other L2's are in service area, 2nd driveway - but you must request ok during business hours. These are accessible 24x7, but spaces may be taken by cars being serviced, so no guarantees.

Blocking their only two 24/7 L2 EVSEs to gain two parking spaces?

Understandable if they are LEAFs getting charged, but ... just for parking cars being serviced? They COULD keep ONE space unblocked, right?

Oh well, one can always buy from a different dealer. Or, they could make up for it by having a QC available (unblocked) 24/7?

I think you misinterpreted that post. He said that during business hours you had ask, because cars being serviced might be parked or being charged. I would hope that if they are just parked that you could get one moved...or you might be directed to the one in the sales area. It sounds like after hours they are simply available.

Dave has it pretty much correct.

Karl stated that during work hours, the two service-area EVSE's are generally dedicated for Leaf charging, but those spaces may also be used if empty for cars getting transitioned into service bays. Karl said that should an owner need a charge and the sales-area is in use and the service EVSE spaces are occupied by non-Leaf vehicles, they'll be happy to move them, but you must request permission for these service EVSE's.

Should be understandable that they are a business first, and their business customers must take priority.

Like everyone else on this forum, I look forward to the day when the EVproject finally installs those promised public chargers!

I was speaking of the availability of the two "service" EVSEs AFTER hours, when they might remain blocked and there would be nobody to move the blockage.
Sorry if I did not understand correctly.
