"Nissan Motor Corp. acknowledges that, once the Leaf catches on, a flood of used batteries could result as the life span of a battery is longer than an electric vehicle's."

They probably are talking about the economic life of a car in Japan.. which is around 6 years (usually 6000 miles per year and then exported to other countries to be sold as used cars).. I believe in the US 10-15 years is considered the economic life of a car. It would be nice if the battery lasted 15 years at 12k miles per year.

They have stringent inspection requirements for old cars in Japan, it gets progressively harder and expensive to keep an old car on the road.
