Backup camera sometimes black

Searched “backup camera black” under the assumption that it’s a “you pushed this button didn’t you” type of thing but I’m not finding anything.
Sometimes when i backup the gauge bar is there and the projected direction is there, but the background is totally black. Like the camera itself is off or its white balance is set way too high or something. And sometimes it’s not and seems to work normally. I want it to work normally ALL the time.

IIRC, there is a recall for some Leaf rear cameras, but the replacement process is not established.
