    8 AWG for 50 amps?

This has probably been asked a bunch, but for my short run of about 6 feet, can I use 8 AWG? I'm converting a NEMA 6-50 that was on a 40 amp breaker to a NEMA 14-50. I also went ahead and swapped the breaker up to 50 (because that's what you expect to be able to draw with that plug), when I ran...

    Totally done with public charging.

I know, I know. Everyone else was done ages ago. But, up here in the PNW we've had really reliable public charging for a few years, so I've actually been using my Leaf for road trips. Lately, though, it's been getting really hard despite stellar reliability of chargers. For example: yesterday I...

"Standard, 8-speed, dual clutch, automatic transmission"

Just watching some football and I heard that. No way that will ever need any repairs. And if it does, I'm sure it'll be cheap!

What can I buy ahead of time for the electrician?

I've got an electrician showing up in about three weeks. Yes, three weeks. Trade work is backed up like crazy over here right now. Which is why I would like to pick up any parts that she may not already have on her truck (I'd like to avoid being rescheduled because parts need to be purchased)...

How hard is it to move roof vents?

I just bought a house (woo!), and I specifically looked for a south-facing roof, but the south side is where every single vent is installed. No idea why they did that. The roof has 5-10 more years on it, so I'll probably wait a bit, replace the roof, then add panels, but how hard is it to move...

Looking at houses: need some rough estimates for evse work

A lot of the houses here are pretty old. No grounded outlets, 150-amp service if you're lucky. Breaker box on the wrong side of the house. etc. Let's say, worst case: 150-amp service that can't handle another 50-amp breaker, on the wrong side of the house with 50-year-old wiring. Assuming I...

How's the leather in the '13 Leaf?

I'm gonna be picking up a '13 Leaf in the next couple months and I'm wavering between a loaded SV and SL. I like the wheels on the SL, but really, the only difference is the leather. Is it pretty nice leather? Worth it, you think? If I found either one with a good battery, I'd probably just buy...

    2016 Volt Rev 2

So, the rumor is that it'll have a bench seat in the back, about 50 miles of electric range with better MPG in CS mode and regular gas. If that thing has a bigger trunk as well, that's a slam dunk for me when my Leaf lease is up. It'll probably still have a slow-as-crap 3.3kw charger, and...

Plug-In Chrysler Minivan Will Hit Market in '15

Looks like Chrysler is set to release a plug-in hybrid minivan? That would be ideal, thought I'm not sure Chrysler is committed enough to EVs to avoid screwing it up. My guess would be an ICE that spins up under pretty much all acceleration. Otherwise, for a car that large and heavy, it would...

Broke down and bought a second ICE car.

Well, I made a good go at being a one-car, electric-only household, but we finally got a bit fed up. We take a lot more road trips than we thought and renting is kind of a pain in the ass, especially if you want a larger car. So, now we'll have a 2-year-old Mazda5 for road trips and our Leaf for...

    What happened to Getaround?

That used to be great. I got a car there a couple months ago and I got the first car I requested. Now it's a ghost town. All the cars are still listed, but every single one gets no response. I've tried 12 cars already and nothing. Did everyone abandon it for something else?

    Freaking out a bit here.

Just wanna vent for a bit. Don't mind me. My wife and two small children are coming back in the Leaf from a trip down to Eugene. They are currently parked at an amusement park about 8 miles from the next QC with 14 miles on the GOM. When I push the range by myself it's fun, but now I'm just...

Just a question for you guys with panels and an EV...

Does it bother you that you're capturing power in DC, losing some of it through an expensive inverter, then loosing more again when your car's rectifier turns it right back into DC? Anyone ever think of just hooking some panels into a battery and using CHAdeMO exclusively to charge the car?

    Good Road Trip Car

We are a one-car household and currently have a Leaf, but we are thinking about getting a second car just for road trips. Probably something large, like a minivan, because, might as well, and we're a family of four. Cool highway features (like adaptive cruise control!) would be nice, but I'd...

    Financing a Lease Buyout

The residual on my 2-year SV/charge lease is about $18,000. At first I thought no way I'd be buying it out, but now I'm thinking it may be possible. I could have about $1000 of mile overage, and then if gas is just a tad higher in a year and a half ($4.50 or so) the true value could be about...

New "gun" quick charge connectors installed in Portland

Just spotted this at the Blink QC at Fred Meyer in NE Portland: So much nicer that that old connector with the stupid lever. This really erases the only real advantage Combo has over CHAdeMO. And I'd bet there are more of these new connectors on CHAdeMO chargers than there are Combo chargers...

Free charging is NOT a good thing.

I just went to check out the "electric avenue" at PSU today. Basically, it's two quick chargers and a couple level 2s, all free. There were cars parked at each quick charger, both completed, probably forever ago. One of the cars was plastered with signs basically saying "If you unplug me, I'll...

Lease Trade? I have SV with Charge. Portland, OR

Just putting this out there (not even sure NMAC will let you do this) in case anyone has an SV or SL with premium package and maybe wants to save some money per month by trading down to my SV with charge package. I'm paying $290 a month until September of 2015.

Charge timer with 80% limit and no time of use billing?

When I first got my Leaf I set up an 80% timer to end in the early morning, thinking that if it's good to keep the battery at 100% for as little time as possible, keeping it at 80% for as little time must be good too. But, I just got a 30-amp EVSE installed and it's kinda nice to just fill it up...

Got some electrical questions that have been nagging me.

Seems like with EVs the charger is a big deal. 6.6 kw was a big upgrade for 2013 and the rectifiers at quick charge locations are the size of a large closet. So, based on that, I think that AC to DC is a Big Deal. Then there's the 80kw motor in the Leaf and 200+ kw motor in the Tesla that needs...
