I managed to get hit by a rock, and it cracked the windshield , so I'm looking at replacement now.

My service advisor quoted $1500-ish, and made some statement about how non-OEM glass would be cheaper, but Nissan might not honor the warranty around leaks and things if they don't do the replacement with OEM glass.

My insurance company (Progressive) tells me that I'd be $400 out-of-pocket in addition to the deductible if I go with OEM glass https://mechanicguides.com/best-windshield-repair-kit/, so it's a pretty substantial price difference.

For those of you that have had a Nissan before, is that really true?

"Might not honor the warranty" is a time-(dis)honored traditional way to get customers to pay through the nose for OEM parts. While technically true, it isn't usually an issue. Just get reputable aftermarket glass.

Get the windshield that the insurance company gives you for free... Glass should not have a deductible... They just give you a list of places to call (glass specialists), and you pay nothing... Never go to the dealer for this..

PS - They cannot tell you that you void your warrantee for what glass you use. The glass installer has his own warrantee that it will never fail and they will replace the glass free... Nissan HAS NO SAY in this matter...

PSS - I cannot believe that your insurance company (Progressive) has a "deductible" for glass.. I have been driving my cars for 45 years, and my coverage has always been "FULL GLASS". After all, glass is cheap nowadays..... A new windshield CANNOT go for more than $200-250..... So if you DO have a high deductible, pay for the repair yourself, and get a new insurance policy.... for FULL GLASS..

Fun fact: most, perhaps NO, car companies make their own glass. They contract out to other companies to make it for them, and those companies in turn make the same glass and sell it outside of the dealer's parts channels.

For example, on my 2003 Nissan Altima I got a rock chip and crack when the car was only a few weeks old  I went to Safelite who got me the exact PPG replacement part, only difference is it didn't say "Nissan" anywhere on it. The total out of pocket cost was the same as my deductible, except I did NOT have to tell my insurance.

As far as leaks...since that's an installer issue, Nissan isn't going to cover that either, regardless if you use a factory part or not, unless you had done the replacement through a Nissan dealer.

That will vary by state (and in this case, country). Some states mandate zero-deductible for windshield replacements (so you don't drive around with cracked glass). However, California is NOT one of them as I can attest.

Hello!

Im new here, from Paraguay South america. We haven't so many Leafs there, and recently i cracked my windshield...
I wonder if there's an equivalent of the windshield in another nissan Model? example: Qashqai or so, because for me, it will be difficult and expensive to get the original glass replacement.

Thank You!

Apparently , the Qashqai is named the "Rogue Sport" in North America.

Windshields are rarely shared between models, but I wish you the best of luck!
