This will be the big kick-off to our annual all-electric vehicle rally this summer, BC2BC-2014, 1500 miles from Mexico to Canada. We would like to bring as many electric powered vehicles as we can to Irvine, California at 9am until noon on August 9, 2014 for the "World's Largest Electric Vehicle Gathering".

The vehicles need to be assembled by 9am and remain assembled until 12:00pm. All the vehicles on the lot MUST BE ENTIRELY ELECTRIC POWERED. No hybrids, no fossil fuel cars, no "range extenders", no hydrogen. If you have tow vehicles that are not 100% battery electric, those must be parked off site, preferably in the parking lot across the street at Irvine Sprectrum shopping mall.

We have almost one thousand parking spots to fill, and we hope to do that with antiques, trucks, buses, cars, motorcycles, and anything else that is a transportation vehicle powered by autonomous battery electric power. We will have additional information in the coming months.

We would like to bring as many electric powered vehicles as we can to Long Beach, California on the morning of August 10, 2014 for the "World's Largest Electric Vehicle Gathering". Details of exact location in the coming months.

Tony, FCEVs _are_ ENTIRELY ELECTRIC POWERED. I assume you meant "by on-board batteries alone".

I think it's pretty lame that they want to cut out PHEV vehicles. So I guess even a BMW i3 REX isn't welcome.
I think it would better raise awareness of electric vehicles if all sorts were included in the massive parking lot photo shoot including PHEV. Show how many choices there are for any sort of driving requirement.

For the rally itself, that has to be BEV only.

Well, it's not "they"; it's me that will look out over (hopefully) 1000 cars with lots of news media and announce that their isn't a drop of oil burned in those cars.

Like was mentioned several times, if you want an oil burner convention, that should be easy. It's not like there's even a challenge. Just drive, add oil when the oil tank gets low, and keep driving. Easy.

No BMW oil burners at this event.

I have no problem with it at all. It is for pure BEVs, period. If it has a fuel tank, it does not qualify. Works for me!

Next all Volt owners will insist they are not driving a Hybrid.
Oh well, some even say Prius is an electric vehicle ;-)
Probably because it is: HEV = Hybrid Electric Vehicle. It's simple, if the motive force is provided wholly or in part by electric motor(s) (whether said motor(s) is/are used to turn wheels, treads, propellers or what have you), it's an EV. The only question is _what kind_ of EV. If Tony wants to restrict it to BEVs only he should just say so, cause we all agree on what the definition means.

I thought it was pretty clear when I spell out what isn't acceptable.

Battery autonomous cars, no other power source except stored electricity.

I think 1,000 BEVs all in the same spot would be awesome. On the other hand, I see merit in PHEVs because they can be a good stepping stone for ICE drivers that finally realize that with their 40 mile range PHEV that a BEV could more than meet their needs.

The point revolves around, who is the gathering aimed at? Is it for preaching to the choir, or for perhaps drawing in some ICE drivers that are curious but have rejected BEVs because of range anxiety, but would perhaps consider a PHEV.

I see nothing wrong with having separate events or having a combined event. The only limitation may just be the practicality of the amount of room available.

We will not have room for oil cars. If I had access to 5000 paid spots, it would be a different story.

With only 1000 spots, I'm confident we can fill it, and I don't want the public message to be that there needs to be any oil to transport cars. The fact that there can be oil powered cars is a given.

By the way, none of the vintage / antique cars will be oil powered. John Q. Public might wonder why newer cars need oil to make the EV part work.

Also, since this is the launch event to our All Electric Vehicle Rally, which doesn't allow oil cars. Frankly, it wouldn't be much of a challenge with 100,000 public oil stations that can quickly refuel oil cars.

What a great idea.

Living in the mid-west, we are in somewhat of a BEV desert.

Aside from the Beardsley Brougham  , The Tesla Roadster, The S, Leaf and some home made electrics, what other BEV's might be there?

That makes sense.

If it were me, I'd open it to PHEV in order as Erg4all says to "perhaps drawing in some ICE drivers that are curious but have rejected BEVs because of range anxiety." And also for fear of being unable to fill 1000 spots with BEVs alone. Not that there aren't plenty of cars in the region, but the public charging infrastructure falls far short of supporting 1000 cars all driving to the same location and needing to recharge.

But... it's not me. It's Tony, who doesn't fear being unable to fill the spots and thus wants to go for the stronger ZERO OIL message. Good luck. If anyone can pull it off it's you.

Now for a follow-up someone else could organize a PHEV gathering to promote outreach to a broader audience. But it had better be 5000 spots because after this 1000 won't make the news. :)

The Mitsubishi, the Fiat, the Ford, maybe the non-rex i3; just to mention a few...

Fit, Spark, Rav4, Smart, Coda?, maybe the Kia Soul by then? Jay Leno has a 1909 Baker Electric. Plus assorted home conversions from years past - Karmann Ghias and Porsche 914s were fairly common, and maybe there's still some Escorts and Fairmonts from whatever the EV conversion company in Santa Rosa was called back in the '80s and early '90s - my memory fails me.
