Folks in CA might not be able to change hearts and minds in Japan, but you should have a 'fighting chance' with the folks at the Los Angeles Times, right?

Did you manage to listen to that entire video? This guy seems to be in his own world of ignorance.

He's not much of an engineer if his answer to a problem is to throw up his hands and declare it "unsolvable".

Where and when did he make that declaration?

Did you read the quote in the OP? The issues he quotes (e.g. power surges) are already being addressed by Tesla via local battery storage. This concept is synergistic with EVs in that one could re-purpose end-of-(automotive)-life EV batteries for stationary storage. And that's just one solution to this problem. Besides, how much of a power surge is there when an industrial plant fires up in the morning? That's a lot of power.

Another solution, by the way, would be battery swapping. In that case, you never have to quick-charge a car, you simply have a constant load trickle-charging a bank of batteries.

There are countless other solutions to this problem.

What makes a good engineer is being excited about problems, not turned off by them. To a good engineer, a problem is just an opportunity to create a solution.
