Since on the weekends there are two non-peak windows for PG&E midnight-3PM and 7PM-midnight, is there a way to split the charging timer and let it know that it is okay to start charging again after 7 PM? See summer rates in the image as an example - (might not be entirely accurate since I saw somewhere that the window begins at 11:00 PM instead of midnight)

Are you on an EV plan like EV-A?

I'm not and am on E-6 Smart, so http://www.pge.com/about/rates/rateinfo/rateoptions/daylightsaving.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; applies to me .

Page 4 of http://www.pge.com/tariffs/tm2/pdf/ELEC_SCHEDS_EV.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; describes the schedules for EV plans. I had never looked into those in detail until now since PG&E's estimator said that'd be the WORST plan for me but man, those time bands SUCK compared to other TOU-based plans like E-6.

Times may relatively suck but rates are awesome and NOT tiered! So while I would be paying up-to $0.285/kWh in non-peak using E-6, I now pay a about $0.098/kWh
Still am curious about how to split the timer across two periods in the same day

Here is a comparison:

The tiering in E-6 for me doesn't matter much since almost every month, I'm within tier 1 (baseline). In winter, I might enter tier 2, sometimes. IIRC, I don't hit 3.

And I am always in Tier 3 for marginal usage (maybe 4 after adding the EV).. Being closer to the coast where the "Baseline quantity" is very low and I have a house and a family that is home during good part of the day.

I would try to stay in offpeak and avoid the partial peak by charging between 12 midnight and 7AM. If you want to minimize the time the battery is at full charge set the timer to complete charging by 7AM. I prefer going with the lowest temperature by charging at midnight and letting battery cool for as long as possible.

Mainly thinking weekends, I still want to have the option if enabling both midnight-3:00PM and 7:00PM-Midnight off peak windows

BTW, the reason why I've said EVA is worst for me is due to the attached output from PG&E's estimator.

I ran into an interesting interaction this last weekend.

I have a 12AM-12AM timer setup for 80% on the weekend, and an 8PM to 8AM timer setup for 80% on weekdays. On weekends we take more random short trips, so I like to have it as charged up as possible. We only do level 1 charging, because that is all I really need.

My wife took it out in the evening on Sunday and got back with ~25% charge and plugged it in. I verified it was charging.

Monday morning it was only about 40% charged. WTF?

The 12AM-12AM timer dutifully stopped charging at midnight, and the next charge timer doesn't kick in until 8PM the next night. It was totally logical, yet not what I was expecting. I am probably going to change things to 80% 12-12 for all days as I don't see a good way to avoid this without having better timer options (more than one timer per day). Kind of lame.

Perhaps a do-not-charge timer would be a better approach so I could not have it charge during peak hours?

It seems to me that with the Carwings crap it would be logical to have the local power company keep my car aware of the current grid status so I could select "Grid Friendly" charging with a 40% minimum reserve and be done (charge immediately to 40%, then wait till whenever power company gives the go-ahead).

I had something similar happen. I just started on TOU rates on a pilot program PEPCO is running in the Washington DC area. They've installed a dedicated smart meter only on my existing evse. The on-peak window is noon-8pm M-F. Weekends are completely off-peak.

I therefore programmed my charging timer, Timer 1, for the first time. I have a 2014 SV, which replaced a 2012 SL. The timer allows charging from 8:10 pm to 11:50 am M-F. I haven't assigned Sat or Sun to Timer 1. Bottom line, the car shouldn't charge from 11:50 am to 8:10 pm, M-F. Sat and Sunday can charge anytime.

Saturday about 2pm, I plugged it in expecting it to charge, but it was blocked by the timer, and I had to push the button that temporarily enables charging. WTF?

I'm new to using the charge timer routinely, anybody experienced this before? I've got it make it idiot-proof for my wife (that didn't come out quite the way I intended :? ), who would have just plugged it in and walked away, thinking it was charging.

If either timer is on, the car won't charge unless it is within the timer window. If you want it to charge just by plugging in, you need to make sure that both timers are off OR set a timer to charge all day every day (say, 12:10 AM to 12:10 AM).

However, since you seem to be using only one timer, the solution is easy: set Timer 2 to charge all day on weekends.

One quirk of the timers that you need to be aware of is that the Monday timer won't start until 8:10 PM (nothing on Monday morning) since that is the start time for the day. You might want to set Timer 2 for 11:50 AM to 11:50 AM Saturday and Sunday. I think that might still charge on Monday morning, although I'm not sure about that since I don't use a timer that crosses midnight. But, then, the car wouldn't start charging on Saturday until 11:50 AM.

Just be aware that if either timer is on, the car won't charge unless it is within a timer window even if some days aren't selected.
