I have an upgraded Nissan brick that sits in my garage, while the cable and j1772 adaptor have been running out from under the door so I can plug it in. The garage unfortunately is full, and parking the Leaf in there is not an option. Someone came along and chopped the J1772 adaptor off! Didn't even bother to take the 8 feet of cord hanging out from under the door, seems like a mean kid more so than someone going for copper...Any recommendations on what to use to replace the adaptor? I'm looking at the adaptor alone on http://www.tucsonev.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for $155..Definitely reasonable. Any ideas for a good armored protected setup outdoors?

Thanks in Advance!

You can get a whole cord and plug cheaper at: http://store.leviton.com/Electric-Vehicle-Charge-Connector-A2055-PEV/dp/B009UCE7EE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The problem with buying just the plug is that you have to have the right crimper in order to put the new pins on. Of course, changing out the cord means you have to go inside the brick. What I would do first is contact the Upgrade EVSE folks and see what they might charge to repair it for you. They could easily have some spare parts around that would make it cheaper/simpler for them...and you would be sure that it was done properly.

Be aware that the item mentioned above is only rated for 15A. If you have an upgraded Nissan brick, you may need one with a higher rating. Not sure how current it is, but the OpenEVSE wiki has a page with a number of vendors.

Good point, although I do believe that the plug and cable that is currently on the upgrade has the exact same 15a rating. Anyway, here's the 30a version, which is actually more expensive than the J1772 handle quoted above: http://store.leviton.com/Electric-Vehicle-Charge-Connector-A2034-PEV/dp/B00FW1RBCC" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

To reiterate my suggestion above: Ask the folks at EVSE Upgrade for advice and/or a repair quote before taking this on.

If you want the 15A cable Amazon sells it for $99 shipped.
Wow, good price: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CJWSV0S/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_LZD8sb0JRS2MEC9W" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's the way to go. splice the old and new cable together in a weather proof junction box. Yeah, clunky, but the cheapest way to go.

That $99 Leviton cable on Amazon is a Level 1 cable. The insulation is "only" 300V. The Leviton L2 cable has 600V insulation.

Here's another thought.. Since it is part of the car, can't you claim it on insurance? A replacement from Nissan should cost more than your deductible. So use the difference in money to get yours fixed.

Yeah. that sucks that somebody would cut it off. I suspect it was either kids playing a prank, and probably not realizing that the cord costs more than $10. Or it could be somebody in the neighborhood that hates plug-in cars.

I tested that cable with my megger. My megger goes to 1000V and the cable insulation passed just fine. I really do not think you can buy just "300V" insulation. Ingineer upgrades our Nissan EVSEs with 300V rated insulation with no failures.

It really boils down to whether the UL rating is important to you.

Hmm... Since it was in the garage (or just outside of I guess), this would not be considered part of the car, but should be covered under your homeowners policy (theft). If it was "attached" to the vehicle at the time of the theft, it would be considered a vehicle component and come under the car insurance... Either way, with the deductible I would just buy a new cord... :D
