The "Volt" concept car was basically a Camaro concept car from the same era with a golf cart drivetrain. Having displayed the car once with that 'stomped on the head' look, they apparently felt compelled to make the actual Volt also squashed in the roof area. Another Brilliant Move by GM.

Unfortunately, for now, N.A. EVs seem to be basically only in the sub compact size, unless you want to shell out $60k+

Huh? Per http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=38428&id=38002&id=38187&id=38168, Specs tab, Leaf and Merc B-Class ED have midsize car classification. Bolt and Kia Soul EV have higher passenger volume figures than the Leaf.
