Are seat covers safe for heating seats? I am looking for cover seat to protect my leased 2015 Nissan Leaf S. I have read over all the old threads, awesome read on different covers. I am not willing to spend $500 (front+back) covers for a car I am not keeping.

Something like these two:

So the big question is: HOW safe is seat covers with HEATING seats? Someone at auto shop said to NEVER do that. Eh? Or is there specific fabric that works better? I work outside so I get wet, cold, and dirty getting in/out of the car.

I've used Wet Okole seat covers with both our LEAFs. These are neoprene, so they are thick and insulating. I say this not to suggest that you get them, but because it's probably the worst-case for trapping heat inside the seats. I used the seat heaters with them occasionally. The warmth from the seats was significantly reduced and I worried that the seats themselves might get too hot. But they were none the worse when I removed the covers to return our leased 2012. In fact the interior was pristine despite frequent trips with our 160 lb Mastiff.

Although the 2015 has some differences I was able to make the covers fit pretty well and so we'll get 6 years of use out of them at least.

Note - I found the rear seat cushion was outrageously difficult to remove on the 2015:

I have ordered a set of Coverking "1st Row Poly Cotton Custom Gray Seat Covers" (part no. CSC1P3NS9397) for the front seats (from CarID.com). I'm assuming that the "poly cotton" will be thin enough to transfer heat (but tough enough to put up with normal use and abuse):

I should have them in about a week, so I'll let you know how they work in the next few weeks.

02/11/2015 UPDATE:

These seat covers arrived today--about a month after I ordered them--but the quality is really unacceptable, especially at $159.99 for the pair. (I am returning them.)

The covers are very wrinkled and have a bit of cardboard dust from the box. (The covers appeared to be stuffed into the box, and there was no internal packaging such as a plastic bag.)

The holes are rough, not exactly round, and fraying at the edges.

Additionally, all the packing paperwork indicates that these are for a 2011-2012 LEAF--the order documents clearly indicate 2015 LEAF--so I wonder if they're even the correct covers.

I personally don't think that you should buy a cheap car seat cover, and especially not something that's plastic based coz you don't want it to melt. Cloth would be a safer bet and I don't see why you shouldn't get a protective one. Maybe you could check with the guy who is selling the covers to you? He should be able to tell you whether you'll be able to get what you need with them. I mean, no point to buy a cover which reduces the heat in your seats when you've paid a bomb in car finance for the feature.

I don't understand why everyone is so invested and worried with this... Are you worried that the covers will hurt the heated seats, or the heated seats will hurt the covers?

The heating elements are either timed or have a thermostat, and they will turn off when they want to. The heat from the heated seats may have a delay in getting through the covers, but they will work. I have neoprene covers and they work fine.

..... Such worry..... All of the seats and coverings will tolerate ridiculous heat when you leave the car in the hot summer sun parked any way..
