I would be willing to suggest the "sports car", if indeed based on the EsFlow concept, is well ahead of the Infinity. After all, the EsFlow "concept" has already been shown to rave reviews and the Infinity "Concept" has not even surfaced yet. The EsFlow uses the current LEAF drivetrain components and the Infinity next generation (ish) components. I guess I am well aware of the competitive nature of product planning and announcements. So when a product planner gets real "vague" with stuff everyone knows is coming (Infinity many years away??!!) I figure they are just NOT supposed to talk about it. Period!

Last week, if you asked about any intentions to race EV's you would have been told "Someday". This week, we get the "Nismo"! Who knew?

The article is in French but the pics are nice. Very cool to see it out of the studio and driving.

Nice find, TRONZ! C'est magnifique! Est-ce qu'il y a un video? Je voudrais voyer le ESFLOW en movement!

I had Google Chrome translate for me: The article concludes with following:

"The Esflow runs a few laps to convince us of his performance on the road. It would certainly have its place in the traffic! Ilya Moskov also seems very comfortable to maneuver the car, at a millimeter, in the elevator leading to the huge studio. The Esflow still raises a few minutes before returning to his box. Its mission is complete, we would like to see her already."

AMEN, I would like to see her already, too!

Très beau! Elle regarde très sportive.

If there's a convertible version, then I'll be clearing more space in my garage.

The leaf is so "for sale" when this car becomes available. I don't carry more than one passenger at a time now, so no loss for me.

The nice thing about electrics is the simplicity, expect to see lots of small production boutique cars once components become widely available.

IMO Nissan should aim for the "mass" market by keeping it relatively simple and inexpensive.

Even if it used the current LEAF 24 kWh battery capacity, the lower weight (though I doubt it could be produced at the 970 kg prototype weight reported) and wind resistance should give this car excellent performance and considerably longer range.

As others have mentioned, it could do for the EV sports car market, what the 240z did to the ICE market 40 years ago.

And even if I bought one, I'd probably still exercise my option to purchase my LEAF when the 36 month lease ends. I will still need a people and cargo carrier, and what better 5 passenger+cargo vehicle will I be able to purchase for the $16k residual?

The new Leaf ad running now during the Tour de France has two clips of the ESFLOW at the end with a mention of "the future." Makes it seem like a sure thing. Only question is how long it will be....

TT

Under Ghosn, Nissan has an impressive record of converting concept cars into production cars. I agree though, the real questions are when (Smyrna completion?) and how much ($?). The fact that Nissan is keeping the EsFlow out there and even inserting it into main stream media is a very positive sign. Fingers and toes crossed!

Nissan’s MX-5 is back
Nissan has revived plans for a rear-wheel drive sports car and the newcomer will use the Leaf’s electric drivetrain
...
Now, though, we have learned that the car – which is likely to get an entirely different name – will use a new chassis. In March this year, Daimler bosses signed an agreement to supply mid-size platforms to Nissan, which would accommodate everything from four-cylinder motors to V8s.

This will not only underpin the new MX-5 rival, but also the 370Z replacement and the next GT-R. The Infiniti G and a new sports car from the luxury brand will also use it. Insiders in Japan believe that bosses have yet to make a decision on what will power the new Nissan, but a tuned version of the Leaf’s drivetrain and a hybrid set-up are under consideration.

The company has previously expressed an interest in an all-electric rear-wheel-drive sports car, with the ESFLOW concept, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March. To ensure sharp handling, our sources have revealed that Nissan will get help in tuning the chassis from Lotus Engineering; the Brits could also assist with a new lightweight construction. Expect the new model to arrive in 2013, with a price tag of around £20,000.

Nissan’s MX-5 is back

Any new news on this future car is encouraging, so thanks evnow.

This piece is very broad and lacking in detail, though. It covers a Daimler/Nissan cooperation on chassis which will underpin everything from a small sports car to the next GT-R and Infiniti G!?! That's a very broad spread of vehicles. And there is nothing specific that says that Nissan will build the electric sports car. The report just says that Nissan has shown interest by building the concept and showing it. But then the reporter goes ahead and gives a model year and price point for the car. I'll take this with a huge grain of salt.

But thanks again for keeping the juices flowing. :)

I love the comments on the article you linked to
That's what you get with the "comedy" of Top Gear.

It just shows me that there are as many, or more, reactionary dimbulbs in the UK as there are here, as a percentage of the population.

People don't become "dimbulbs" out of the blue. They are a creation of lazy (and sometimes corrupt) media. The problem with Top Gear is, it reinforces prejudices & stereotypes - just like Fox News.

Interesting. I think the Infinity (Hybrid?) Sports car will be based on the 2009 Essence concept. If the Diamler sourced "scaleable" sport platform works with floor mounted battery packs, then an electric sports car is certain. The Lotus tuned chassis is ironic since the MX-5 was created as an affordable Elise. Looks like Nissan is closing the circle back on Mazda with a much more powerful concept. Interesting and VERY encouraging EsFlow news I think!

I found three different spins on the AutoExpress article:

http://www.0-60mag.com/news/2011/08/cars-nissan-might-be-planning-a-mazda-mx-5-rival/

http://www.iol.co.za:80/motoring/industry-news/nissan-s-mx-5-rival-could-be-a-hybrid-1.1111233?pageNumber=1#comments_start

And this: which makes it sound like Nissan is considering the car (EsFlow) as different than the MX-5 project or a better way to do a MX-5. With 400+ pounds of instant torque, I vote for a better way to do a MX-5!

Nice to see the EsFlow mentioned again in this clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTbeJikIGmg&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Look at how small the EsFlow is in comparison to the LEAF! Pause the clip during the top view to really see it. This could be a 2600lb car.
