In another thread regarding Ingineer's L1/L2 mod it was mentioned that the Nissan included L1 EVSE won't charge at 16A if plugged into 120V even for a future Rev2 upgrade. This appears to be a limit set by the charger in the car.

It was also mentioned that it would probably not be worth any effort to have a selectable LOWER amp draw for a portable L1 unit (modified or not).

But I wanted to find out if the LEAF's charger will allow a LOWER than 12A draw. So I ran a test, and below are my notes.

Bottom line: YES, the LEAF does charge fine on 8A/120V.

Code:
Used a Kill-A-Watt (KAW) to monitor L1 charging of LEAF using the portable included L1 EVSE supplied with a Volt.

13:21 started LEAF on Volt L1 EVSE; drawing just under 12A.

13:22 CW: 83% charged; 4hrs to go; 65/59 miles;

13:25 at 4 minute mark: KAW reports just under 12A draw (11.88-11.96) at 122V (122.2-122.6) and 1438-1465W;

13:36 At 15min mark 122.6V, 11.82A, 0.35kwh.

Tried to change Volt L1 to 8A on the fly (no unplugging) with the button for that purpose provided on its EVSE; does not do it; unplugged from car, pushed button to change to 8A, plugged back into car.

13:37 KAW reports 123.6V, 7.67A, 934-940W.

13:40 CW: 83% charged; 6:30hrs to go; 65/59 miles;

13:51 (30 minute mark): KAW reports 123.2V, 7.62A, 940W, 0.58kWh
