Yes I read about this in "Internal Combustion" by Edwin Black. "How corporations and governments addicted the world to oil and derailed the alternatives". I especially like the part where Edison's batteries for Ford's electric car (12,000 cars per month factory developed) were sabotaged en route from NY to Detroit resulting in the venture coming to a halt. Uh - guess who owned the rail road delivering the batteries? You guessed it - an oil company  . The book goes back to Greek times showing that throughout "civilized" history various groups controlled the fuel to control the people. Very interesting read - but also depressing. This has motivated me to install solar panels asap.
