This seems like a good thread to use for our own "birthdays". Our Leaf is one year old today. In the past 12 months, Sparkii has gone 8,720 miles and consumed 2,850 kWh of electricity. We've also "grown" 675 trees. Never been stranded, only went into the "red" once. Still waiting for the other shoe to drop, but this has been the most trouble-free car I've owned.

How many other vehicles have you owned that you remember their "birthdays"? Whadda car!

well, had to wait until today which will be "memorable" for a few reasons but today is my Leaf's Birthday delivered Jan 18th, 2011. it has performed excellently over 12,048.7 miles and that is expected to stay that way for a while and the reason.

got up this morning and what do i "not" see. that would be the car.

I wish you worry free, many more years of gas free driving. Hope you will not get freezing rain in the afternoon.

weather has two scenarios both at 45% chance. one is snow continuing until early afternoon, brief lull and then rain thru the weekend. another 2-4" of accumulation to go with the 9" we have.

the other is snow all day, not turning to rain until Thurs early AM with another 6-12" of accumulation.

the latter would most likely mean a total shutdown of town until early next week. have to be in Seattle Sat so that will be a real challenge!!

My Leaf is coming up on its half birthday (will be 1.5 years old) on December 17. Very pleased that it hasn't put on any weight and doesn't require any more parenting than it did when I got it. Don't know what will happen when it is a teenager, but that's quite a ways off for now. ;)

Yes - wonder where Gudy is.

A lot of people's Leaf's 2nd birthday would be in the next month. If all goes well, I should have my second Leaf before the second birthday ...

Had an opportunity to talk to Gudy briefly at NPID in September. They appear to be still happy with their Leaf, and the car is doing very well. Plans were hatched to get a second EV, but I'm not sure if anything materialized. Perhaps he will check in here on the forum before long. This was an eventful year for the Leaf, let's hope that 2013 will set a different tone.

It's sort of like celebrating a child's second birthday, even though you've discovered that they suffer from an incurable, serious but not-life-threatening genetic disease. Smiles a bit trembly and a few hidden tears.

The cat is out of the bag, but the official birthday isn't until Sunday. This birthday greeting from Nissan will air during Sunday Night Football.

Wow, finally gave me a reason to watch football.

77 days until the Daytona 500 but who's counting.

Yeah LEAF!!!!

<embarrassed for missing the OP date>

The post you replied to is a year old...

A bit tricky since the title of the thread was changed. ;)

Actually, Lance Armstrong received the first LEAF which was a pre-production model. I believe Gudy bought the first production one.

And the delivery was the last I ever heard of that. I guess he was beginning his fall from grace even then.

This is Jeff from Nissan.

Below is a press release just issued. Hopefully, you'll agree that it's an appropriate way to celebrate.

Love the cupcakes, BTW.

Jeff

NISSAN CELEBRATES TWO YEARS OF LEAF SALES
WITH ANNOUNCEMENT OF U.S. BATTERY PLANT
-Largest lithium-ion automotive battery plant in the U.S. now assembling batteries in Tennessee to power all-electric, zero-emission 2013 Nissan LEAF-

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (Dec. 12, 2012) – With two years of Nissan LEAF sales just completed, the company today announced the launch of the United States’ largest lithium-ion automotive battery plant in Smyrna, Tenn. The facility – which is making battery components for the ramp-up of production of the all-electric, zero-emission 2013 Nissan LEAF early next year – is one of three of its kind in the world operated by a major automaker.

Since December 2010, Nissan has delivered more than 18,000 LEAFs to U.S. customers and more than 46,000 worldwide, making it the most successful 100-percent electric vehicle in history.

“Opening this U.S. plant is an important milestone in Nissan’s overarching strategy to foster sustainable mobility around the world,” said Carlos Ghosn, president and chief executive officer of Nissan Motor Co. “Nissan is the zero-emissions vehicle leader, and we are making significant strides as one of the largest producers of electric vehicles and batteries in the United States. The opening of this facility in Tennessee supports our goal of making zero-emissions mobility a reality through American jobs and American manufacturing.”

The first batteries produced at the plant have completed the required aging process and are now ready to receive their first charge. The state-of-the-art facility is capable of expanding to produce modules for up to 200,000 batteries annually depending on market demand. Those batteries can serve as the power source for the all-electric Nissan LEAF and for future vehicles that could be added to the portfolio.

The new battery plant is located adjacent to Nissan’s existing vehicle assembly plant in Tennessee, which has been retooled to accommodate production of the Nissan LEAF. Adding production of the Nissan LEAF and the battery has resulted in the creation of more than 300 U.S. manufacturing jobs to date. As battery production and LEAF assembly expand to accommodate demand, combined operations could add up to 1,000 additional jobs as needed.

The Nissan LEAF is manufactured on the same line as Altima and Maxima so volume can readily be adjusted among the vehicles to meet demand. The 2013 model-year Nissan LEAF will receive a number of technological advancements and feature changes, which will be announced closer to the vehicle’s on-sale date in early 2013.

The recent growth of Nissan’s U.S. manufacturing plants is part of a strategy to localize core-model production. By 2015, Nissan aims to have 85 percent of all Nissan and Infiniti products that are sold in the United States produced in North America. Nissan, which is in the middle of a product blitz launching five key models in 15 months, will report record sales for 2013 following a year of significant new vehicle introductions, such as the all-new 2013 Altima, Sentra and Pathfinder.

Combined, the construction of the battery plant and modification of the Smyrna manufacturing facility represent an investment of up to $1.7 billion when built to full capacity. The project is supported by a U.S. Department of Energy loan for up to $1.4 billion.

The loan was issued as part of the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, program authorized by Congress as part of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. The program is designed to accelerate the development of vehicles and technologies that increase U.S. energy independence, create cleaner means of transportation and stimulate the American economy.

Thank you, Jeff, for sharing that press release and for your presence here. It's great to see Nissan moving full steam ahead with big plans for EVs! At 27K miles and counting, I remain a happy LEAF owner.

For 2013 and beyond, my main suggestions to make LEAF acquisition and ownership more compelling are:

- Offer the option of a larger battery pack for those willing to pay for a bit more range. 100 real-world freeway miles on a battery-preserving 80% charge would be a great goal. This could be a nice step up from the base model without having to jump to a Tesla S (or Tesla's successor "Bluestar" vehicle if it gets produced).

- Subsidize the installation of Quick Chargers at Nissan dealerships. In many locations, QC isn't going to happen anytime soon without Nissan's help. QC is a great sales tool and revolutionizes EV ownership.
