Hi PaPaSteve,

I have been running my 2011 Leaf for six years now and love it. An original Japanese car with the white interior. I too have had the 12volt battery problems and seem to have a handle on it now.

Normal car batteries are designed to provide high cranking current then recharge immediately. They degrade quickly if standing for a few days with less than full charge. One of the side effects is a voltage drop when a sudden heavy load is put on thwe12v battery. A momentary heavy load, such as the 380v battery relays switching on startup, A/C compressor starting, etc cause a sudden voltage drop for a second or less and trip spurious alarms/error codes.

The Leaf draws the lead acid battery down just while standing. If it gets too low for too long the plates will sulphate and the battery will not hold a charge, so voltage drops quickly = Lots of spurious error codes. A cheap battery may not last a year if the car is regularly left standing for four or five days at a time. I know!

During the Covid lockdowns I was only using the car once a week. Towards the end of the first lockdown I found I was getting stupid problems and then the car would not switch on unless I charged the 12v battery after only 36 hours. The ebay bargain "Snappy" brand I replaced it with only lasted eight weeks. The next one lasted one year using the car two or three times a week.

If left for more than four days make sure 12v battery is fully charged and then disconnect it. I have left my 2011 Leaf for eight weeks and it was fine. Did not have to charge 12v when I got home and it started when battery reconnected.

Best battery 12v battery for an electric car is a semi-deep cycle AGM battery which will not degrade when standing for longer periods with less than full charge.

I have been running an Optima D51R yellow top for 18 months. The battery fits straight into the battery carrier. I find I need to start the car every five days to top it up as the onboard systems (smart key and 2G link to Nissan) do draw it down. If I ever have to replace it I will alter the battery carrier to fit the biggest Optima yellow top possible in the space.

-------------------------------------
Two other things that might help...

Firstly unplug the dongle from the OBD port when you are not using it. It uses about 7x the power the car uses when switched off.

The other draw is the TCU.

In the UK the car TCU automatically downloads data to Nissan through the 2G mobile phone network. Unfortunately I live in an area of poor cover 2G is lousy and is now being discontinued. It seemed that the car would try to connect and keep trying even after it was switched off. I have now removed the unit. I can not be sure if that has improved 12v battery life as I did it the same time I fitted the Optima. I have no alarms or warnings apart from one line on Leafspy.

I understand this will also disable Carwings. No loss as I was never able to use Carwings anyhow as it was registered to the first owner, who died, and I got no help from Nissan or the RAC who ran the system in the UK when I tried to re-register it. (It doesn't seem to be much good anyway.)

Instructions on how to disconnect/remove the TCU here:- https://mynissanleaf.com/threads/tcu-disconnect-service.25949/
--------------------------------------
There is a whole thread about 12v battery problems here:- https://mynissanleaf.com/threads/dead-12v-battery-question.18258/

I hope this is of interest and wish you good luck. Em

Over 10 years ago I started to make an index for DTC codes to manual
chapter. I did not complete this, but did have a lot of it. I used a 2012
manual vs what Jim used(I suspect 2011) so pages did differ.
below is the index.

The new OBD2 dongle has arrived.
It took me quite a bit of time to figure out how to configure it to work with LeafSpy.
LeafSpy kept looking for the older dongle and not wanting to hook up.
Finally opened up LeafSpy in the phone app list to realize it needed to have the Bluetooth button activated.
Now the DTC list looks completely different.

Whoops . . . sorry for the monster pics in the previous post, thought I was inserting just the thumbnails.
!2v battery info . . .
Lately I've been learning how to build a successful lithium battery pack and have come to understand matching internal resistance in each cell is as important as matching capacity.
So what about lead batteries ?
Turns out a flooded lead battery should measure nearly zero resistance.
This one measures .22 ohm
Meaning : a load test is not a completely valid test for lead battery in a Leaf.
A resistance test is a better measure of health.

Thanks everybody for your guidance.

Over 10 years ago I started to make an index for DTC codes to manual
chapter. I did not complete this, but did have a lot of it. I used a 2012
manual vs what Jim used(I suspect 2011) so pages did differ.
below is the index.

Turns out a flooded lead battery should measure nearly zero resistance.
This one measures .22 ohm
.
That is not correct. a FLA cell has low resistance when discharged and it rises as it charges, hence the current it takes to charge is high when discharged and tapers as it charges. A totally discharged FLA will also have a high resistance, which is why when you try and charge one the current will start low and rise then taper again as it charges.
If a FLA had low internal resistance (like a capacitor) then it could provide all its stored current at once, again like a capacitor, which it can not!

Not being a trained electrical engineer I probably rely on web searches way to much.

By this chart, a flooded lead battery charged to 13v should measure an internal resistance of .009 ohm
My battery charged to 13v is measuring .22 ohm
Logic suggests the size of the battery surely plays a role, more plate surface should lower the ohm resistance.

Unlike lithium batteries, with lead batteries it's rare to find resistance specs listed.
Here is one spec sheet for an Optima AGM group 51 showing .0046 ohms at 13.1v :

Thanks for you insight.

To be honest, I don't know what that chart is trying to convey? Lead acid batteries can store a lot of energy but can't take or give it up quickly, hence it has high resistance. Conversely a super-capacitor stores relatively little energy but can release it all almost at once, and can discharge and recharge very quickly, releasing thousands of amps if shorted, although for a short period of time.
A single group 31 battery can recharge a super-capacitor many times, but can't crank a large bore diesel by it self, the super-capacitor that is charged by the very same battery can easily crank the same big bore diesel several times, and recharge from the very same single battery. It is the difference in internal resistance that make one able to supply enough cranking current and the other not, in the timeframe needed.
That is long way of saying I don't know what they are trying to say with that graph.

Understanding the graph . . .
It shows how the internal resistance changes as a function of the open circuit voltage
The horizontal line is voltage
Vertical line is ohms
So as the voltage increases the resistance drops

This path of exploration probably wouldn't have occurred to me if I haven't been learning how to build lithium battery packs and gathering up the tools needed to create a safe end result.

But that seam counter to what you observe when you either load or charge. When you try and discharge you are limited in output due to the internal resistance and that rises as load increases.
Also as you charge, the closer it comes to full charge the less current can pass, again showing an increased internal resistance.
can you explain to this old gray hair what I am missing, and how I've understood it for decades? I am seriously asking for some education here.

Note EmmaK1 post #21in this thread where she describes how the car's constant phantom voltage drain, the charge system and the battery type are not really a good system match leading Leaf car owners to have constant 12v battery problems.
Because of the system mismatch the lead plates inside the battery sulfate creating higher resistance.
Sometimes a typical load test will catch the problem but not always.
As with mine ... the battery is rated 500 cca, the load test revealed it to be 470 cca which the tester stating as "good".
Not having eyes on the meter I don't know it that "good" was high, medium or low portion of the range.
Tinkering with building smallish battery packs from used lithium cells I have purchased a cell tester that shows both voltage and internal resistance.
A load tester is on the wish list.
Even though my battery is holding 13v when not connected to the car it's not healthy due to high internal resistance.
By all indications the Optima yellow top AGM is a better match for the car.

The coolant pump replacement is the first order of business, then a battery.

I understand all about failing batteries and deep cycle charging protocol, I have lived over them for years while on the road, what I don't understand is the statement that resistance goes down as it charges, That is contrary to observed current as the battery charges and discharges.

The graph comes from an internet search
search terms :
flooded lead acid battery internal resistance
finds something like this :

Battery internal resistance varies with SOC. The lower the SOC, the higher the apparent internal resistance. You can crudely calculate it by using ohms law. R=(E/I) It will be in the milliohms for a good bank.

Tester I used :

YR1035 battery tester

Hope that helps

I found this "white paper" which seams to go into some detail. I haven't had the time to read it cover to cover. but it seams it is not as simple as plain resistance.
If it were, you would see amp draw increase as the battery neared full charge (low resistance across the cell (s)) Which is the opposite of what you will observe.

There has been some good knowledge in this thread helping to track down the issues with our car.
THX Jeff for posting your code list . . . I did save a copy.
THX also to Jim at LeafSpy for helping to get the app working correctly.
I'm feeling confident in the diagnosis so when the coolant pump arrives we'll be back on the road in short order.

I read more of this paper, and it seams what they are saying about cell resistance is more akin to impedance, they pulse a half wave ac currrent through the battery and measure how much is lost between the cell. A high loss (so called resistance) indicates either a poor SOH or SOC while a low loss (again so called resistance) indicates a high SOH or SOC.
Kind of like measuring a motor resistance, the resistance reading will be close to LRA but not running current.
I must admit the math calculation are "above my pay grade", however.

Some progress.
Changed the coolant motor yesterday which is now much quieter.
Still seeing warning lights on the dash and a slight change in the LeafSpy error code.
Now ~ P31E8-00 C0 EV/HEV Water Pump EVC-311
Previous ~ P31E9-00 C0 EV/HEV Water Pump EVC-315
So . . . more digging to do.
From reading the Nico Club sourced manual I conclude there must be a dealer diagnostic tool capable of deeper analyst ?
Also of note : the 12v battery, after sitting for a few days unconnected measured 12.5v and much to my confusion, zero internal resistance.
