Swap-and-go battery technology has seen an electric Holden Commodore set an unofficial record.

The battery-switchable electric Commodore, developed by EV Engineering, has unofficially broken the distance record for a production electric car - 1886km over a 24-hour period.

The official record is held by the Renault Zoe - which used fast chargers instead of battery swapping - at 1618km.

I'm unimpressed.

I've never seen an plan for battery swapping that was economically workable. And I think there's about as much chance of that happening as me seeing a plan for hydrogen fuel cells being economical.

I'm glad to see that others are also exploring these other angles. It's always possible that somebody will have a breakthrough that we couldn't foresee.

But I agree. I think the viability of EVs will depend mostly on increasing battery capacity while lowering battery costs.

Swapping batteries is different from swapping something like propane cylinders. Battery capacity can vary wildly.

Only 200km better than fast charging a Zoe?

Am I the only one underwhelmed by this? 75km/hr average on a 100km/hr road, versus the Zoe 67km/hr including lengthy stops for charging the same battery?

Maybe it would get better results on a track?

I'm impressed by this, this is a 122km loop on public roads.

PLace a swap station at the airport, and it could work 24hrs a day. An Aussie taxi does 500kms per day. Even a 85kWh Tesla would struggle in Aussie taxi duty.

GM execs says electric Holden Commodore is ‘folly’:

Strategically placed Superchargers and just 15 minutes of charging to get a boost of 100 miles is enough to cover 500kms per day. Of course the question still remains if supercharging every day is a good thing or not for the battery.
