Our's bounced below 43 Ahr a couple of times and then up to ~43.5 with a "cooler" weather swing before finally dropping the 4th bar at 43.27 Ahr. The last 500 miles took almost 2 weeks driving with this variable battery capacity. Our 2015 replacement battery has remained "parked" on 66.1414 Ahr all summer when charged to "100%" and 268 Gid.

How wild were the swings during that 500 miles, Bob?

Following that wild couple of days, I've spent the last 15 days with very little movement - it's basically been around 42.80AHr the whole time. Today I charged twice and the overnight charge resulted in 42.77AHr and the late morning charge was 42.82AHr. I've driven 420 miles since the swing events occurred.

I really do feel that my car is on a sticky plateau right now and it's either where I'm eventually going to lose the bar, or where I'm going to stay for the rest of winter and I'm not going to lose it.

Only 2 weeks bouncing around ~43 Ah HighDesertDriver? It must have been longer than that. Any idea how long it was from when you crossed 44 Ah to when the bar dropped?

Mwalsh, I've got a feeling that your bar is about to drop very soon - probably just as soon as you realize you need to LOSE the bar and not "loose" it!

No idea how long it took to drop from 44 Ahr, but losses during the winter were zero or very, very small. I was amazed, however, at how quickly Ahr were shed as the weather warmed AND recovered as it temporarily cooled again. 2 weeks and 500 miles are approximate numbers, but likely not too far off. The swings were on the order of .5-.7, but I don't have exact figures, only the disappointment that the bars stayed the same each time it dipped below 43 and then bounced up again. Almost as soon as I resolved not to drive myself crazy focusing on capacity and being satisfied with a loss "sometime this summer", the 9th bar disappeared overnight and I drove to the dealer to reserve a check time.

My brain now wants to know why the car registers only 269 GID when a constant 66.1414 Ahr (at full charge) shows on LeafDD, but we're more than satisfied to have our range back... and I can focus on other non-LEAF issues. ;-)

Edit: Nope. 42.99AHr this morning.
Damn. Well it was worth a try. 43.007 this morning for me - I'm catching up (down?) with you!

That is weird. What %SOC does that 269 GID correspond to? I've noticed my car has two different levels of "full" for a "100% charge", depending on whether I start the charge with a high or low SOC: If I start high, it charges to about 91% (~175 GID) and if I start low it gets to about 96% (187 GID). Have you tried running it all the way down before a 100% charge?

Woot! Congrats!!

Thanks for the specs, Mike. Interesting that after being in the 42's (mostly) for a month or two, that you jumped up into the 43's at loss of the ninth bar. The average is still about 43.3 Ahr; wonder how many folks dropped into the 42's and then bounced back up a bit.

You've renewed my hope; I have lower Ahr and Hx than you now, and have observed a couple of jumps in capacity, and we're looking at mid-eighties for a few more days.... All I want for Christmas is a new battery.

And, obviously, my best wishes to you for getting one. You have to be almost there.

I think I knew last night that I might loose my bar "soon", when I did my "drive to nowhere" after leaving school (Orange to Seal Beach on the 22 and then back the same way to Garden Grove) - I came off the freeway with less range left than I had previously, and actually felt the need to drop into ECO and drive carefully just to be certain of making it home.

So what about these jumps you've seen? As big as the rebounds I saw a month ago? After seeing a couple of other packs behaving this way (HighDesertDriver springs immediately to mind) I have to think those jumps are a precursor in some instances. I say some because there have also been folks who said they saw no jumps like that, only a steady downward curve.

Also, any sign of a plateau for you yet? That's the other thing I saw - bouncing around in an infuriating 0.25AHr spread between 42.74AHr and 43AHr (with the exception of the two large jumps) for the last 30 days, which bothered me more than I care to mention when I was supposed to be seeing a consistently downward trend. Especially on those really hot days last week(?) when I saw 7 temperature bars and the AHr needle barely moved!

Congrats!!! Just when things were looking down with that 41.5 guy. Renewed hope for us remaining 42-9ers. So where are you taking it for the new battery?

I think I'm going to stick with Tustin Nissan - they've been pretty good to me, and I know they've already done a few warranty replacements.

I'm embarrassed to say that I've been watching mwalsh's battery drama unfold like a quiet soap opera from over here on the sidelines.

Huge congrats to you and I hope your new Lizard battery gives you many many years of driving pleasure!

Ahr are very stable when my battery temp stays below 85F. But in the hot days last week, my Ahr dropped from 43.0 to 42.6, so it is clearly not stuck. This week with cooler weather, it is stable at 42.6 Ahr whether I drive it to turtle or just go straight home. Not a great deal of difference any more; it turtles at about 50 miles and my normal commute is 38. I've seen one major jump upward, 43.0 to 43.5 or so, and a couple of smaller ones, but nothing notable recently. Daily excursions of 0.02 or 0.03 Ahr are routine.

As someone else noted, there does seem to be a major difference in final charge level (and Ahr) depending on whether charging from empty or from nearly full. I think last time I topped off when only down one bar on fuel gauge, that caused the jump from 43.0 to 43.5 Ahr. So I didn't do that again! I've also observed a couple of unexplained changes in range. One day I got five or seven more miles than I've been able to for a couple of months, and a few days later I came up very short on range. I'm sensitive to these things because I am driving exactly the same route every day. I know enough to make allowances for headwind or heater use; those weren't involved. So something is changing.

After reading about your loss, I did go out at lunch time and fire up my car, just in case today was Leaf ninth bar loss day. Nope.

-Karl

Thanks, Paul! That's exactly what I have in mind; the 56 mile run from Ridgecrest to my house in Lake Isabella over Walker Pass without burning a drop of fuel.

I actually drove up and over the pass last month several times, but the car was well below LBW at the top. Then down the far side, with GIDs rising. I turned around at the remains of the old Canebrake lodge. On one of the runs back down from Walker Pass, the battery gained 12 GIDs! Do you have a good number for the altitude at the pass? My cell phone GPS was off by thousands of feet when I stopped to check.

Very difficult to estimate miles remaining when driving down steep hills. Especially when you know that you have to turn around and climb back up in order to get home.

-Karl

So happy to see you lost your 9th bar, Mike! :) I too have been watching, hoping it would fall before the cooler weather really settled in. Great to see.
