On arriving home we automatically plug in the Leaf. This of course is convenient. Now I just read in our manual that it is better for the battery to let it cool before charging which requires going back out to the garage.

Is letting the battery "cool down" before charging important ?

Heat is a battery killer.

Having said that, I wouldn't be very concerned where you and I live, especially in these cooler months. Probably a good practice during the summer after 'spirited driving'.

Of course, you can always use the built in timers to start the charge sometime after your normal return to home.
