The Nissan CONSULT-III+ is really expensive. ($10k+)
Outside of the Nissan dealer network, I'm not sure who would invest in one. Maybe a large repair chain or tuner shop? There is some overlap with the Nissan GT-R, since both require the newest version.

Is there any outfit that rents these out?

Most specialty tools can be rented, so I thought I'd ask. Ideally daily rates, maybe a week. I don't expect it to be cheap either, but maybe within hobby budget. Any pointers appreciated.

Nissan wont let those Consults out of there control if they can avoid it. You can get the AE software for a laptop or a pda and from what I am told have the same functionality as consult III+. Also the higher end OTC and Snap on scan tools will give you some access but not much.

What is this AE software and how do I get it ?

Even if you can rent the device, Nissan probably has its own software for the LEAF, and it's not likely that the hardware will have the LEAF-Support software in it.

Get friendly with a LEAF-Certified dealer, and you might have a chance to use it there at the dealer's location.

Maybe somebody could record all the CAN activity while the April-Update is being done?

I've seen it elsewhere as well, but a quick google resulted in this....

That setup is consult III. It will not work on the leaf. The Leaf uses consult III+. Bang for your buck you can not beat http://www.autoenginuity.com/ You will be in the AE stuff less than $500. The consult III+ if you can get your hands on one is being sold to the dealers for 4k. Including a lifetime assist subscription.

I contacted AutoEnginuity late last year and they told me the earliest the LEAF could be supported will be when they get their latest updates from Nissan in October.

I would encourage everyone to let their sales team know that they are interested in purchasing their system once this update is available! :D

As of right now the AutoEnginuity will read all standard control modules on the CAN line. The only thing it will not do right now is EV specific modules. As long as the update comes out within a year you will get it for free. It would be worth the purchase price now just to be able to program your I-keys at home.
